Easy Bread Machine Sandwich Bread Recipe (6 Simple Ingredients)
This easy bread machine sandwich bread has a soft interior, a light crust, and enough structure to hold everything from deli meat to peanut butter and jelly. The bread machine handles the mixing, kneading, rising, and baking, so you get a dependable homemade loaf with very little hands-on work.
I am still not very good at cutting it into perfect slices, but this bread is absolutely delicious, especially slathered in butter.

This bread tastes every bit as good but way better than store-bought bread. Even sweeter, the bread machine does all the work for you so all you have to worry about is eating it.
Ingredients for Bread Machine Sandwich Bread
- Warm water: Water at about 110°F wakes up the yeast. Water hotter than 120°F can kill it.
- Sugar: Sugar feeds the yeast and helps the loaf rise.
- Bread machine yeast: This provides the rise. Instant yeast works the same way in this recipe.
- Olive oil: Oil keeps the loaf soft. Melted butter also works.
- Bread flour: Its higher protein content creates a taller, chewier loaf. All-purpose flour works, but the loaf will usually be softer and shorter.
- Salt: Salt adds flavor and keeps the yeast from rising too quickly.
How to Make Sandwich Bread in a Bread Machine
- Add the warm water, sugar, and yeast to the bread machine pan in that order.
- Let the yeast dissolve and foam for 7 to 10 minutes.
- Add the olive oil, bread flour, and salt in that order.
- Select the Basic or White Bread setting and choose a 1.5-pound loaf.
- Press Start and let the machine mix, knead, rise, and bake the bread.

Tips and Troubleshooting
- Spoon and level the flour. Scooping directly from the bag can pack too much flour into the cup and create a dense loaf.
- Check the dough 5 to 10 minutes into kneading. It should form a smooth, soft ball. If it looks crumbly, add water 1 teaspoon at a time. If it looks sticky, add flour 1 tablespoon at a time.
- Measure carefully if the top sinks. A sunken top usually means the dough had too much water or yeast.
- Check your yeast and water temperature if the loaf is short or dense. Old yeast or water that was too hot can prevent a proper rise.
- Choose a darker crust setting if the loaf looks pale. Use the medium or dark crust setting on your machine.
- Cool the bread completely before slicing or storing it. Transfer the loaf to a cooling rack for about 30 minutes before cutting. Allow another 30 to 40 minutes before wrapping it so trapped moisture does not make the bread damp.

Variations
- Use melted butter instead of olive oil for a richer flavor.
- Replace the sugar with honey.
- Use warm milk instead of water for an even softer loaf.
- Replace half of the bread flour with whole wheat flour. The dough may need 1 to 2 extra tablespoons of water.
How to Store Bread Machine Bread
- Counter: Let the loaf cool completely, then wrap it well and store it at room temperature for 3 to 4 days.
- Freezer: Slice the loaf first, wrap it tightly, and freeze it for up to 3 months. You can remove only the slices you need.
- Skip the refrigerator: Refrigerating bread makes it go stale faster.
Bread Machine Sandwich Bread FAQ
Can I use all-purpose flour?
Yes. You can replace the bread flour with the same amount of all-purpose flour. Because all-purpose flour has less protein, the finished loaf may be a little softer and shorter.
Why did my bread sink?
A collapsed top usually means the dough had a little too much liquid or yeast and rose more than its structure could support. Measure the ingredients carefully and check the dough during kneading. If it looks very sticky instead of forming a smooth, soft ball, add bread flour 1 tablespoon at a time.
Can I use the delay timer?
No. This recipe proofs the yeast in warm water before the remaining ingredients are added, so it is not designed for the delay timer.
Would you like to save this?
Can I use active dry yeast?
Yes. Use the same 2¼ teaspoons of active dry yeast and let it dissolve and foam in the warm water with the sugar for 7 to 10 minutes before adding the remaining ingredients.

I tried and work pretty good except top collapsed a bit at rhe end. All ingredients were fresh. Any tips?
Thank you for your comment on my blog post about the Easiest Breadmachine Sandwich Bread! I’m glad to hear that the recipe worked well for you, but I understand your concern about the top collapsing a bit at the end. There are a few tips that might help prevent bread collapse in a bread machine.
Firstly, make sure you’re using fresh yeast that hasn’t expired and hasn’t been exposed to moisture, heat, or light. Old or stale yeast can affect the bread’s rise and structure. Secondly, check the water content in your dough. Too much water can result in a wet dough that may collapse during baking. Ensure that you’re using the appropriate amount of water for the recipe.
Additionally, consider the size of the bread pan in relation to the amount of dough you’re using. Using a larger pan for a smaller amount of dough can lead to collapse. Lastly, avoid opening the lid during the preheating and baking cycle, as this can cause a loss of heat and affect the bread’s rise.
I hope these tips help you achieve a perfectly risen loaf in your bread machine next time. If you have any more questions or need further assistance, feel free to reach out. Happy baking!
