How to Talk to Kids About Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is not just turkey and pie. It is a good day to teach kids about gratitude and togetherness, and it sticks better when you keep it simple and hands-on.

Start with the Story

Explain that Thanksgiving started as a way to celebrate a good harvest and give thanks for what people had. With older kids, add more of the history and talk about how sharing was part of that first meal.

Would you like to save this?

We'll email this post to you, so you can come back to it later! You'll also get regular recipes & printables to your inbox!

Focus on Gratitude

  • Have everyone name three things they are thankful for.
  • Start a thankful tree or a gratitude jar where everyone adds a note each day leading up to the holiday.

Make It Hands-On

  • Cook together. Let them mash the potatoes or stir the pie filling.
  • Craft. Make thankful placemats or paper turkeys with a gratitude note on each feather.
  • Give. Donate canned goods or make cards for the neighbors.

End with Reflection

After dinner, ask what everyone liked best and what they learned. Then talk about ways to keep saying thank you the rest of the year.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

A few questions that come up every November.

Yes. Mine download from the post each one lives in. The ones from other blogs are free on those sites, so follow their download steps.

Pick one theme and print a level for each kid. The T is for Turkey letter find, the greater than less than page and the grades 3 and 4 math pack all have turkeys on them, so everyone works on the same thing at their own level.

Start with the letter finds and the cutting practice. They are short, they build fine motor skills, and a preschooler can finish one before losing interest.
