I’m what you’d refer to as a “soupie”. I love soup, all year long. It’s not only hearty, but it’s often made with healthy ingredients, too.

For this reason, I love making this bacon and beans soup. It’s literally the definition of comfort food, with each and every spoonful.

Since you can make this in the slow cooker, it’s one of those soups that permeates the smell all around the house. There’s nothing quite like walking through the front door and smelling the soup getting hot and ready!

My boys love to eat slow cooker soups because it’s always hot and waiting for them to fill up their next bowl.

This is super helpful when we all have different schedules, but all of us want to make sure that we fill our bellies, too!

Soup toppings are typically chosen to add flavor, texture, and visual appeal to a dish.

Some of the most popular toppings include croutons, diced vegetables such as carrots, celery, and onions, shredded cheese, sour cream, bacon bits or smoked fish, nuts such as almonds or pumpkin seeds, sliced scallions or chives.

Depending on the soup recipe being followed and the preferences of the diner, other flavorsome options for soup toppings may include those specific to certain cuisines such as parsley pesto for Italian minestrone or cilantro-lime salsa for spicy tortilla soup.

This is why soup accompaniments have become a feature in their own right – giving ample opportunity for home cooks and professional chefs to be creative and tailor soups to individual tastes.

How do you store leftover soup?

When it comes to storing leftover soup, having the correct container is key. An airtight container will keep the moisture locked in, preventing bacteria from forming and spoiling your soup.

Additionally, a non-reactive container such as glass or plastic will best protect the flavors of your soup.

Be sure to double check that the containers are properly sealed before refrigerating them. For optimal freshness, frozen soups should be used within three months and refrigerated soups should be used within three-four days.

Make sure to properly label all containers with the name of the soup, date it was made, and any crucial ingredients that need to be noted (i.e., allergies).

Following these guidelines ensure you always have a delicious bowl of leftovers at your disposal!
