If you’ve never made a homemade coffee cake, you’re in for a treat. There is a bit of measuring, mixing, and a few moments of baking – and before you know it, a golden brown, perfectly baked cake will be ready.

My boys always ask for coffee cake because they enjoy the dense texture with the sweetness. Even though they don’t drink coffee, they’ll never pass up on a chance to have a slice of this cake!

You can drizzle it with powdered sugar frosting or serve it plain. There’s no wrong way to eat it!

How is coffee cake different than regular cake?

Coffee cake is a genre of cake distinct from traditional cakes. It typically contains sugar, butter, eggs, coffee or cocoa powder, and flour as the main ingredients.

A coffee cake may contain nuts or fruits such as blueberries; it also often includes cinnamon used in the topping or filling. It includes a streusel-like topping made from flour, sugar, and butter that gives the cake a crumbly texture.

Coffee cakes are generally enjoyed with coffee due to their complementary flavor profiles; nonetheless, they can be served alone as a dessert or in an array of exciting ways, like with cream cheese frosting.

Unlike other cakes, coffee cakes do not require prominent decoration, as the streusel topping (or simple sugar and milk drizzle) already provides a visually appealing contrast between its light golden color and darker brown hues on top.

How do I store leftover coffee cake?

When storing leftover coffee cake, it is essential to take precautions to maintain freshness and enjoy the best taste.

As soon as the coffee cake is cool enough to handle, it should be wrapped tightly and stored in a plastic container with an airtight lid. Due to the cream cheese, it needs to be stored in the fridge.

It is not recommended that coffee cake be stored in the refrigerator for more than three days as moisture can cause spoilage of the bakery product.

Also, freezing coffee cake is an option but no longer than one month due to possible freezer burn or ice crystallization damage.

The most crucial aspect of preserving coffee cake is ensuring a good seal so that neither moisture nor air enters the container where it is stored; sogginess can set in rather quickly if this precautionary measure is neglected.
