Blueberry Cobbler with Cake Mix (4-Ingredient Dump Cake)
This easy blueberry cobbler with cake mix turns four simple ingredients into a warm blueberry dessert with a golden, buttery topping. With about 10 minutes of prep and less than 30 minutes in the oven, it is an easy treat to make when you need dessert fast.
I love to make recipes from boxed cake mixes because the dry ingredients are already measured, sifted, and mixed. Keep yellow cake mix, blueberries, sugar, and butter on hand, and you can have this cobbler ready to serve within an hour.

This quick cobbler is especially handy when the house fills up with hungry kids or unexpected company. Serve it warm on its own, or ask your guests to bring vanilla ice cream to spoon over the top.

Ingredients for Blueberry Cobbler with Cake Mix
- Yellow cake mix: This easy shortcut creates the sweet, crumbly cobbler topping without measuring several dry ingredients.
- Blueberries: Fresh, canned, or frozen blueberries make the juicy fruit layer at the bottom of the cobbler.
- Granulated sugar: Sugar sweetens the berries and helps them create a syrupy filling as they bake.
- Unsalted butter: Butter binds the cake mix and helps the topping bake until golden.
How to Make Blueberry Cobbler with Cake Mix
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and prepare a 9 x 13-inch baking dish.
- Toss the blueberries with ½ cup granulated sugar, then spread them evenly in the baking dish.
- Soften the butter without melting it completely.
- Work the yellow cake mix into the softened butter until the mixture is crumbly and no large dry areas remain.
- Spread the cake mix topping evenly over the blueberries.
- Bake for about 28 minutes, or until the topping is lightly golden. Let the cobbler cool for about 10 minutes before serving.
Tips
Why is my topping dry or powdery?
Dry or powdery spots happen when some of the dry cake mix is left uncovered by butter. Make sure every bit of the mix is worked into the butter, spread the topping evenly, and bake until it is golden.
If you use frozen blueberries, add them without thawing so their juices stay in the baking dish. The cobbler may need a few extra minutes in the oven.
Let the finished cobbler rest for about 10 minutes before serving. This gives the blueberry filling time to thicken slightly while keeping the dessert warm.

Blueberry Cobbler with Cake Mix FAQ
Can you use frozen blueberries in blueberry cobbler?
Yes. Add frozen blueberries directly to the baking dish without thawing them first. They will release juice as they bake, so the cobbler may need a few extra minutes in the oven.
Does blueberry cobbler freeze well?
Blueberry cobbler freezes well when stored in an airtight, freezer-safe container. Freeze it within a day or two of baking, then thaw it overnight in the refrigerator and warm it in the oven before serving.
Can I use a different cake mix for this fruit cobbler?
Yes! This easy recipe works with several types of cake mix. Try white cake mix, lemon cake mix, or even spice cake mix for a different flavor.
Can I use different fresh berries for this recipe?
Of course. You can use another type of fresh or frozen berry, or combine several berries for a colorful fruit cobbler. It is a simple way to use whichever fruit you already have on hand.
Would you like to save this?
How do I store leftover blueberry cobbler?
Let the cobbler cool to room temperature, then place it in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Warm individual servings in the microwave and add a scoop of ice cream on top if you like.

Blueberry Cake Mix Cobbler Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 box yellow cake mix
- 4 Cup(s) blueberries you can do fresh, canned, or frozen depending on your choice and the time of year. see blog post for notes
- 1 stick Unsalted butter
- ½ Cup(s) Granulated sugar
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F
- Toss the blueberries with the granulated sugar, then spread them evenly in the prepared baking dish.
- Soften butter in large mixing bowl in the microwave for a few seconds. You don’t want to completely melt it.
- Using your clean hands, pour the cake mix on top of the butter and mix thoroughly. You may find that you have to press the mix onto the sides of the bowl to get all the butter worked in. The mixture will be crumbly and not totally moist.
- Scrape the cake mixture (or use your fingers to sprinkle it) on top of the berries in the pan.
- Place the dish in the oven (middle rack) and bake 28-minutes or until lightly browned on top.
- Let your blueberry cobbler cool for at least 10 minutes before serving. (Tastes amazing with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top)

I am assuming if Blueberry Pie Filling is used it would be the whole can!?!
Yes, exactly! You’ll use the whole can of Blueberry Pie Filling to make the cobbler. It adds just the right amount of sweetness and flavor. I hope you enjoy making (and eating) it!
This does look and sound very tempting to make. I am sure that even a GF mixture should do the trick.
Oh, I’m so thrilled you find the recipe tempting! 💙 You’re absolutely right—using a gluten-free mixture should work beautifully. Blueberries have such a vibrant sweetness that pairs well with just about any topping, so I’m sure it will be just as delicious. If you give it a try, I’d *love* to hear how it turns out. Happy baking! 😊
I went exactly by the recipe after 28 min it’s as still like crumbs. I bake all the time so I know how. So what’s the problem?
I’m sorry to hear that! It sounds like the cake mix might not have been fully saturated with butter. Try making sure every bit of the topping is well-moistened. Happy baking! ?
I made it it was great, but the cake mix topping was a bit too crunchy
I’m glad you enjoyed the blueberry cobbler! It sounds like the cake mix might not have been fully moistened with the butter.?
My son and husband really like this food. Thanks for share.
I made this for Father’s Day today. I hope everyone will like it! 🙂
and it was super delicious! Thanks, momma! 🙂
If I’m using frozen blueberries, do I need to thaw them first?
no, it will make them soggy
Can you put blueberry pie filling in this? I have blueberries but not 4 cups. This looks delish!
absolutely! It will be runnier, but still yummy
does the butter have to be unsalty?
yes. The boxed cake mix contains salt. If you don’t use unsalted butter, your recipe may taste salty as opposed to sweet. You don’t want that. 🙂
Mine didn’t turn out like the picture, but does it need to be refrigerated?
Most things don’t turn out like the pictures – the pictures are highly stylized to make your mouth water. LOL! Photography and “pretty foods” are their own skills. Anyway, no. You do not have to refrigerate it. Just cover the leftovers with foil or plastic wrap (if your container doesn’t have a lid). You can keep it for a good 2-3 days at room temperature.
Throw your serving in the microwave for 15-20 seconds and top it with vanilla ice cream for a yummy treat! 🙂
It was a hit. Used fresh picked blueberries of which some were tart and gave it a good flavor .
That is so awesome to hear! 🙂

I made this the other day for my niece who just had her second baby, knowing how exhausting a newborn plus an older child can leave a woman I decided to bring dinner and dessert for her to give her a break. For some reason mine didn’t look anything like your pictures – it was more of a blueberry crisp than a cobbler but she texted me with rave reviews, even her extremely picky toddler ate it and that in itself is a big compliment lol. This time of year the blueberries are on sale a lot so…..next one will be for us! 🙂

I love easy recipes like this, so good! Thanks for sharing.
This looks delicious. Thank you.
I make a Blueberry Crunch that is very similar to this but just use a pastry cutter to cut the butter into the mix instead of melting the butter. i also add chopped pecans to the topping because who doesn’t like pecans? My husband suggested a lemon cake mix instead of yellow cake mix because he likes lemon blueberry muffins . . . that is delicious too!
Also, I buy blueberries on sale (24 oz. for $5 last Monday), rinse them and spread them in a single layer on a cookie sheet and freeze them. When they are frozen, I put 4 cups in a quart-size freezer bag and we can have blue berry crunch in the winter!
let me grab a glass of milk, I’ll be right over! I invite you to share at the Thursday link party ( starts tonight at 7pm ends Sat midnight). Hugs
