Blogging Basics: Follow Me Buttons on Sidebar

Please welcome Adriana to 3 Boys and a Dog. I put out a plea for someone that could tell us how to get the “follow me” buttons in our sidebar. I let them know it had to be in “dummy language” and be written for Blogger and Word Press. Adriana responded and did an EXCELLENT job of writing the tutorial. So, Crystal, here is your answer. icon smile Blogging Basics: Follow Me Buttons on Sidebar ~Kelli

TwitterBadge Blogging Basics: Follow Me Buttons on SidebarSocial networks are hot right now, and linking your social network profile to your blog is even hotter. The trouble is, getting that cute little Twitter bird in your sidebar and making it clickable (and pointing in the right direction) can seem pretty daunting – especially if you’ve never done it before.

Don’t worry! It’s not complicated. You don’t even need to hire a web designer. Just follow these simple steps:

First, find the buttons you want to use. The web is teeming with free Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn buttons. Simply go to your favorite search engine and type in “free social networking icons” and you’ll find thousands.

Next, download the icons you want to use to your site, then upload them to your server or file hosting site. If you’re using Word Press you can do this from your dashboard by clicking “Media” then “Add New.” Click on “select files” and browse your computer files to find the correct one. Double-click it to upload it to your host.

If you’re on Blogger you will need to store the image on a photo sharing site like Picasa or Flickr. For either platform, make sure you write down the full file path for the image.

Now, place a text widget (Blogger calls them gadgets) in the sidebar where you want your icon to appear.

From the Word Press dashboard, click “Appearance”, then “Widgets”, and choose a Text widget from the “Available Widgets” section. Click and drag it to the sidebar you like on the right side of the page.

From the Blogger dashboard, go to the layout tab and click on “Page Elements.” You’ll see a graphical representation of your layout. At the top of the sidebar area, click “Add a Gadget.” Scroll until you find the one called “Text” and click on it.

Now you need to construct the HTML that will display the button and make it clickable. It’s going to look like this when you’re done:

<img src=”http://www.yoursite.com/images/twitter.png” alt=”" />

And here’s what that all means.

The first part,<span style=”color: #ff0000;”> “<a href=” tells the browser to expect a link, which of course is “http://twitter.com/yourusername”. That’s where you want people to go when they click on the button. Make sure you put the <span style=”color: #ff0000;”> “>” in there, so the browser knows where the link ends.

The second part, <span style=”color: #ff0000;”>”<img src=” tells the browser where to find the image. That’s the location of the file you uploaded earlier. Again, make sure you use the <span style=”color: #ff0000;”>”>” to tell the browser you’re done giving it the file location.

The last part, <span style=”color: #ff0000;”> “</a>” tells the browser you’ve ended the link. Without that, all kinds of weird things will happen, so don’t forget it.

On either blogging platform you should now have an empty text widget. On Blogger the widget will be in a pop-up, and on Word Press it opens in the sidebar location. (If you don’t see it, click the little down arrow next to where it says “Text”. If your Blogger box went missing, click “Edit” on the appropriate Gadget.) Type a title for your new text widget in the first box – something like “Follow Me!” works great.

In the text area, copy and paste your code from above. Click “Save” and you’re done!

That’s it. Just plug in your Twitter page (or Facebook profile, or any other site you want to link to) and the link to the image you chose, and you’re done. Piece of cake!

One word of caution, though. Please resist the urge to skip step two and link directly to the button designer’s page. You’ll lose your link if their site disappears, and more importantly, it’s considered rude. So host the image on your own server.

I’ve already done some of the work for you. The Twitter images you see here are in the public domain, which means you are free to use them. Just right-click and choose “save as” to download to your computer.

Join Me In My Blog Frog Community!

Did you notice the new widget on my left side bar? It says “Join Me and My Readers!” Come on, join me!

I want to start a new game today and hope that my readers join along. My house is a TOTAL disaster, my emails are filling back up, and I have some posts that I need to write. Oh, I also have some paperwork to process.

So, here is the game that I would like to play in my community:

1. We post a to do list in the “Cleaning Game” discussion

2. We play on Twitter using hashtag #cleaninggame

3. The type of game will be explained in the daily BlogFrog post.

Examples include:

 1. 15 minute timer – we work for 15 minutes then come back and say what was accomplished
 2. 30 minute timer – same idea as above
 3. 1-10 – We number our posts and do the numbers in random order (follow directions on Twitter)
 4. Procrastinator – We choose an item to complete on our list that has been on it WAY too long

Kids and Cleaning (With a Disciplined Approach)

Please welcome Crystal to 3 Boys and a Dog! Do you have problems keeping your kids “good” and your house clean? Crystal has a unique approach that she shares with us! ~Kelli

I have a card system that I use when my oldest boys get in trouble… our 5th grader has a tendency to be mouthy and our 2nd grader has ADD and is dyslexic and is often off track and struggles with focus.

The ‘mouthy one’, and I say that with great love, gets in trouble for the most obvious reasons. Our 2nd grader regularly forgets homework, has days where he does not follow directions or instructions, and often forgets that rules exist. So we have found a discipline approach that really works well for both of them. And I can not take credit for it, as my 2nd grader’s teacher told me about it.

*Let me interject and say, we do have steps in place at school to decrease forgetting homework and forgetting school rules as much as possible. He has helpers in the classroom to help him remember and the teacher is very understanding and empathetic, but firm. We stay in close contact with his teacher and have an open line of communication.

I have a set of approximately 15 index cards and each one has a chore written on it. The chores are the things I have never get to or the things that catch up to me with so many children, the things that can never be done too many times with this many people living in one house and the things that take up too much of my time.

The chore written on each card will keep one little boy busy for about 30 minutes- especially for our 2nd grader. And these chores encourage focus, while allowing him to work with his hands, and gives time to reflect.

AND, it helps me!

This is not to say they do not have traditional chores that are expected of them on a regular basis like: cleaning their room, picking up after themselves, helping pickup the living room, etc.

First….

This is what you will want to do:

Grab about 15 index cards and a sharpie. Below is what is written on each of my cards, improvise as needed.

1) Clean the baseboards in the bathroom . Wipe down the side of the tub (outside part) and wipe down the shower glass doors with Windex.

2) Clean the bathroom mirrors with Windex and wipe down the bathroom sink and counter top with Comet Cleaner.

3) Pair up socks for 30 minutes (Oh, the socks we have with 5 children and I loathe pairing them !!)

4) Clean the inside of the toilet with wand and cleaner and then wipe down the outside of the toilet from top to bottom with disinfectant cleaner.

5) Clean out from under your bed and inside your closet and put anything you find where it goes.

6) Wipe down the outside of all the kitchen cabinets and drawers with cleaner.

7) Wipe down window seals in the dining room, living room, kitchen and your bedroom with cleaner.

icon cool Kids and Cleaning (With a Disciplined Approach) Using Windex, wipe down the light switch plates in ___________. (I list out each room on the card: kitchen, dining, living, etc, so there is no guess work for them.)

9) Clean the baseboards in the kitchen and hallways with cleaner.

10) Vacuum living room and sweep kitchen, dining area and front entry way.

11) Wipe down the outside of the refrigerator, dishwasher, microwave, and oven with Windex.

Now, two of my cards are grace cards. The word grace is written on these cards and the definition as stated in the dictionary:

grace: goodwill; favor
a delay granted for an obligation
the love and favor of God toward man

Then…

When they get in trouble at home or school, the cards are presented to them face down and they draw one card, or two, depending on the offense.

They read their card out loud and if it is the grace card I like for them to acknowledge if they understand what grace is.

Finally….

While raising boys it is very important to me they know how to do these things and never consider cleaning as ‘a woman’s work’. They will live on their own some day, and they will not find me at their apartment cleaning! Someday, they will likely marry, and it is very important they help their wives. They may also have children, and with this in mind, I want my boys to grow up to be leading examples who assist in instilling and teaching their own children household cleaning.

There you have it. Give it a try. I would love to know if it works for you!

Hallmark Interviews 3 Boys and a Dog! Encouraging Your Kids

While in attendance at Blissdom 2010, I was given the opportunity to speak with Hallmark writer, Sarah Miller. She asked questions and I answered them. LOL!

To be honest, I have kicked around sharing this with my readers. icon smile Hallmark Interviews 3 Boys and a Dog! Encouraging Your Kids This was taken on the final day of the conference… I don’t have a stitch of make-up on, my flat iron had broken, and I had cried most of the day. So, I looked horrible and sounded even worse. But, I was proud of some of my responses and thought my readers might get a kick out of my Southern accent. So, without further ado:

Goodness, but you always get frozen at a weird facial expression, don’t you? LOL!

Yes, I was very nervous! I don’t have a problem talking to people, but I am almost NEVER on camera. icon smile Hallmark Interviews 3 Boys and a Dog! Encouraging Your Kids
