Valentines Trail Mix Recipe

I love a good complicated Valentine’s treat recipe. Truly I do – but, frankly, there are times that I don’t have time to mess with all that.

The kids can even help make it if they’re so inclined (mine weren’t, but whatever), and so what if it’s not perfect – it’s tasty, and you can’t mess up trail mix.

Why Is It Called “Trail Mix”?

Trail mix is a blend of dried fruit, nuts, and other snacks initially eaten by hikers on the trail.

It’s an easy snack to carry around and makes for a satisfying, energizing treat when you’re out in nature.

How Can I Customize Trail Mix?

The beauty of making valentines trail mix is that you can customize it however you like!

Here are some ingredients we recommend using to customize your trail mix beyond the standard recipe below:

  • Dried peaches, cherries, or strawberries (feel free to use any dried fruits you have)
  • Dark or white chocolate chips
  • Nuts such as walnuts, almonds, or peanuts
  • Pretzels or other crunchy snacks
  • Coconut shavings or shredded coconut
  • Marshmallows
  • Dry Cereals (like Chex or similar)

How Do You Store Trail Mix?

When it comes to storing trail mix, the best option is an airtight container. Trail mix can last up to about three weeks stored in this way, so you don’t have to worry about it doesn’t go well before Valentine’s Day!

Just be sure to store the mix away from direct light or heat sources, as these can cause ingredients to spoil faster.

My preference is to keep the trail mix at room temperature. But, if you want to store it in the refrigerator, be sure that the container has a lid that seals VERY tightly so that it doesn’t take on other scents and smells from the foods around it.

A sealable bag is also a great option if you don’t have a rigid-sided container that’s large enough. This is a simple solution for breaking it into serving sizes and sending for lunches, snacks, and more.

I like to get zipper-top bags with a double seal so that I know the trail mix won’t pour out at any point.
