Nebraska is known for being the corn state. Its wide plains and plentiful country means that the food is shared at potlucks and holiday parties. These dishes are popular because they are delicious and can be found in restaurants all over the state.

Chicken Fried Steak

A thin piece of steak is breaded and fried (like chicken) and then topped with gravy. It can be found in most diners and is served for breakfast or brunch. 

Biscuits and Gravy 

This breakfast or brunch dish is hot, creamy, and delicious. Biscuits are laid open on a plate and topped with a generous portion of sausage gravy. 

Macaroni and Cheese

This comfort food can be baked with breadcrumbs on top or can be mixed with cheese sauce and poured into a casserole dish. 

Reuben Sandwich 

This sandwich is loaded with corned beef, sauerkraut, swiss cheese, and dressing stuffed between two slices of toasted rye bread. 

Bierock

These German rolls are stuffed with ground beef, sliced cabbage, onions, garlic, and cheese and then baked. 

Corned Beef Hash 

This dish is a mixture of diced potatoes, corned beef, onions, garlic, and parsley. It’s popular on St. Patty’s Day or the day after using leftover corned beef. 

Chili 

This thick stew-like dish is made with ground beef, tomatoes, onions, garlic, beans, Mexican spices, and topped with sour cream, minced shallots, diced tomatoes, fried onions, or tortilla chips. 

Apple Fried Hand Pies 

Hand pies are perfect for eating dessert on the go. These small pies are dough stuffed with apples and then fried in oil and glazed with icing.

Pork Tenderloin Sandwich 

Pork tenderloin pounded thin, breaded, and fried is perfect between two buns and topped with pickles, onions, and lettuce. 

Raisin Pie 

This classic pie is made with raisins suspended in a sour cream custard and topped with meringue or pie crust.
