This is one of those recipes that surprises everyone. Most people have eaten squash before but don’t realize that this squash recipe is one they won’t forget.

I have people tell me all the time that the ease of the recipe draws them in, but the flavor keeps them around. I have to agree with that statement because both are true!

The fun part about this dish is that even picky eaters like it. It’s tender and sweet and easily eaten with other meats, veggies, and even a holiday meal!

Is there a difference between roasting and baking squash?

Roasting and baking squash might seem similar, but they yield distinct results. When you roast squash, it is typically cut into smaller pieces and cooked at a higher temperature, caramelizing the natural sugars and creating a crispy, flavorful exterior.

On the other hand, baking usually involves cooking the squash whole or in larger sections at a lower temperature, resulting in a softer and more evenly cooked texture.

While both methods enhance the squash’s sweetness, roasting brings out a more intense, rich flavor profile, making it a preferred choice for those who enjoy a bit of crunch and depth in their dishes.

How long does it take for squash to get soft in the oven?

When baking squash in the oven, the time it takes to get soft can vary depending on the type and size of the squash. Generally, for most varieties like butternut or acorn squash, you can expect it to take 30 to 45 minutes, depending on the cooking temperature.

Cut the squash into uniform pieces and place them in a single layer on a baking sheet to ensure even cooking. You’ll know the squash is ready when it is easily pierced with a fork and has a tender, melt-in-your-mouth texture.

This is the perfect side dish recipe! Roasted squash is fork-tender and sweet!

Ingredients

  • 1 large butternut squash
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 clove of garlic
  • 1/2 tablespoon dried parsley
  • Pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400F.
  2. Peel the squash and cut it into 1-inch cubes. It’s important that the cubes are fairly small so they will cook thoroughly.
  3. Mince or finely chop the garlic clove.
  4. Place the oil, parsley, garlic, and pepper in a large bowl and mix well. You can add other seasonings, too, and feel free to add your own flavoring ideas.
  5. Add the squash to the bowl and stir until all the pieces are fully coated.
  6. Transfer the squash to a shallow oven-safe pan. Place in oven for about 45 minutes.
  7. Makes about 5 servings, depending on the size of your squash.
