Texas is known for big skies, large plains, Mexican food, mega-churches, backyard barbecue, and beautiful sunsets. 

These ten food categories include three recipes from notable professional chefs and home chefs, with the recipe testing and dish development done for you. All you need to do is enjoy the wonderful combinations that make these dishes uniquely Texas.  

Brisket 

Brisket is seasoned and smoked beef that is spicy and very tender. You can dip it in barbeque sauce or eat it without. You’ll also be served with white bread, onions, and pickles. 

Chicken Fried Steak 

This thin steak is coated in seasoned flour and then fried (like chicken). It’s then topped with gravy and eaten for breakfast. 

Enchiladas 

Enchiladas are made with corn tortillas filled with shredded chicken, then rolled up and placed in a large baking dish. They’re topped with sauce, sprinkled with shredded cheddar cheese, and baked until golden brown.

Queso 

Melty cheese filled with green chiles, onions, cilantro, jalapenos, and spices is eaten with tortilla chips. This delicious appetizer is served at most Mexican restaurants. 

Puffy Tacos 

 This San Antonio specialty is made with thick, chewy tortillas. They’re filled with shredded chicken, shredded pork, or ground beef and topped with salsa, tomatoes, or onions. 

Margaritas 

This sweet and sour drink is usually be made with alcohol but can be ordered “virgin” (without alcohol). They are popularly served in Mexican restaurants and in pitchers at backyard barbecues. 

Pecan Pie 

This southern dish is a famous Texas recipe. It’s made with pecans, corn syrup, brown sugar, butter, and cinnamon. It’s then poured into a pie shell and baked. You can find it at restaurants, gas stations, grocery stores, and other convenience stores. 

Chili 

This classic stew is made with ground beef, tomatoes, onions, garlic, beans, seasonings, and spices. It’s best when simmered for at least one hour so the flavors have time to get to know each other. It’s a delicious savory dish best served with cornbread. 

Gulf Oysters 

These oysters are topped with butter, garlic, breadcrumbs, or herbs, then broiled in an oven. This dish is often served in seafood restaurants in Austin, Houston, Dallas, and along the coast. 

Kolache 

These round pastries are made with sweetened yeast dough and filled with fresh fruit. They are a delicious snack, dessert, or breakfast.
