Creamy Delicious Cake Frosting Recipe
You’re right if you’ve ever noticed that not all icings are created equally. Many icings are so sweet they take away from your cake’s or cupcakes’ deliciousness.
Well, this recipe is different. It’s creamy and has just the right sweetness. I’m addicted to adding it to my desserts all the time!
The frosting keeps well in the fridge for about 1 week. Mix it well before using it to have a creamy texture again. You can make it beforehand and use the extras for other homemade sweets and treats.
How do I thicken up homemade frosting?
When frosting a cake or confection, achieving the perfect consistency is key to both taste and presentation. If your homemade frosting is too thin, it might not hold well on your cake or could run off the sides.
To thicken it up, gradually add powdered sugar, stirring consistently until the desired thickness is reached. If you want to avoid added sweetness, you can also whip in a small amount of cornstarch or flour; be sure to sift it to prevent clumping.
Chilling in the refrigerator can also help firm things up for cream cheese or buttercream frostings. Finally, for a more stable texture, especially in warm climates, incorporating a tad more butter or solid vegetable shortening will give your frosting the robustness it needs to stand up to the challenge.
Remember, adjustments should be made in small increments to avoid over-thickening.

How do I store leftover homemade frosting?
Storing leftover homemade frosting is a breeze and ensures that none of that deliciousness goes to waste! To keep the frosting in its best condition, transfer it to an airtight container; this prevents it from absorbing smells and moisture from the refrigerator.
Chilling the frosting in the fridge will suffice if you plan to use it within the week. For longer storage, though, the freezer is your ally – freeze the frosting for up to three months.
Before using, defrost it overnight in the fridge, then give it a good stir to bring back its original texture and consistency.
This way, your leftover frosting can bring life to future desserts with the same fresh, homemade flavor.

What desserts do you have in mind for this yummy made-from-scratch frosting recipe?
I’ve tried this recipe twice and both times my icing is a little runny and looks separated no matter how long I beat it. I’ve followed the recipe exactly as it states. Has this happened to anyone and what can I do differently? I want it to turn out so bad!!! Thank you!
When do you add the sugar?
Angela, thanks so much for bringing this to my attention! I always forget to add one of my steps when writing the recipe. LOL! You add it with the butter and vanilla. I have updated the recipe now. 🙂
