Delicious Brownie Cupcake Recipe

Sharing is caring!

This Delicious Brownie Cupcake Recipe is the best brownie layer orange cupcakes, ever. I’ve been making them for years and am still obsessed. I love any and all treats that are orange in color and orange in taste. We’re all about delicious cupcake recipes!

But don’t let them fool you. Just because they’re orange in color doesn’t mean that they’re orange flavored. (although you could always add in some orange zest to change that fact!)

If you’re looking for fun fall cupcakes that are perfect for Halloween, too, these are the best cupcakes for the job. Combining that cake batter with brownie batter is dessert perfection!

Can’t decide between a brownie and a cupcake? You don’t have to! This recipe lets you have both in every perfect bite. Simple, easy, and delicious.

One of my favorites is this orange creamsicle recipe that knocks the flavor out of the park!

Once you realize that you’re not just having brownie and cupcakes together, but also delicious frosting on top, too, your taste buds are not going to be so patiently waiting. After you combine the ingredients and bake this simple dessert, the hardest part is letting them cool on the wire rack once they’re done.

My boys would agree with that statement as well as I have to literally chase them out of the kitchen and away from them while they’re cooling down. Because if I rush the process and try to frost them while they’re too warm, it becomes a melted mess. (still delicious!)

Can you use a brownie mix and a cake mix for this recipe?

If you’re running short on time, you can use boxed mixes to cut down on some of the steps. Just keep in mind that the taste is going to vary versus making this treat homemade.

  • 3/4 cup of butter - softened
  • 2 teaspoons of vanilla
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups of sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups of flour
  • 1 teaspoon of baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • 3/4 cup of Hershey's Cocoa

FOR THE CAKE:

  • 1 1/2 cups of flour
  • 2 teaspoons of baking powder
  • 1/8 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 1/2 cups of sugar
  • 1/2 cup of butter
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 Tablespoon of vanilla
  • 1/2 cup of milk
  • Orange food coloring gel

FOR THE FROSTING:

  • 1 cup of Crisco
  • 1 cup of butter - softened
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla
  • 1/4 cup of heavy cream
  • 4 - 5 cups of powdered sugar
  • Orange food coloring gel
  • Brown food coloring gel

Instructions

To make the brownie mixture, mix together the butter, vanilla, eggs, and sugar.

Grab a different bowl and mix the flour, baking powder, salt, and cocoa. Once blended, add to the brownie mixture ingredients until smooth.

Put cupcake liners in a cupcake pan and fill them 1/3 full of the brownie mixture.

To make the cake mixture, mix together the sugar, butter, eggs, and vanilla until creamy.

Use a different bowl and mix together the flour, baking powder, and salt, and mix.

Add the dry mixture to the cake mixture a little at a time, alternating with milk, until all the flour mixture and all the milk have been added. Mix.

Add in the Orange food coloring and mix to color.

Take the mixture and add to the cupcake liners to about 2/3 full on top of the brownie mixture.

Put in the oven at 350 degrees and bake for 20-25 minutes.

Once done, remove and put on a wire rack to cool. They'll take about 2 hours to cool all the way.

To make the frosting, mix the Crisco and softened butter until smooth. Next, you're going to add the vanilla and blend.

Then add in the powdered sugar a small amount at a time and alternate with the cream until the frosting is thick.

Once the frosting is ready, take out half and add in the orange food coloring.

Then add the brown food coloring to the mix and make it look like chocolate frosting.

If the frosting isn't thick, add in more powdered sugar and mix. If it seems too thick, add in a small amount of creamer and mix.

Put down two layers of plastic wrap on the counter and put the orange frosting in the center of one piece and the brown in the middle of the other. Roll the plastic around the frosting until you have a long tube with the frosting inside.

Trim off the end and place the two plastic wraps side by side in a pastry bag with a star tip on the end.

Beginning at the outside of the cupcake, squeeze and swirl the frosting on top. You should come to a point in the middle. This will give you a multicolor look. Add sprinkles and enjoy.
