How do I know when the cookies are done baking?

One of the trickiest parts of baking cookies is determining when they’re perfectly done. While each recipe might have guidelines, there are some universal signs to watch for. First, look at the edges of the cookies; they should be golden brown and slightly firm to the touch.

The centers, however, might appear a bit soft—this is normal as cookies will continue to firm up as they cool on the baking sheet. Also, pay attention to the aroma wafting from your oven. A sweet, rich smell means they’re nearing completion.

If you’re still unsure, perform a touch test by gently pressing the top of a cookie. If it springs back without leaving an indentation, it’s likely ready to be removed from the oven.

How do I soften leftover cookies?

If you’ve got a batch of leftover cookies that have become disappointingly hard, don’t worry—there are easy ways to bring back their soft, chewy goodness.

One of the simplest methods is to place the cookies in an airtight container with a slice of fresh bread. The moisture from the bread will naturally transfer to the cookies, helping them regain their softness overnight.

If you’re in a hurry, try warming them in the microwave for about 10 seconds. Just be cautious not to overheat them, as this can make them too soft or even cause them to become dry again once they cool down.
