Is a maraschino cherry a real cherry?

The maraschino cherry, ubiquitous in cocktails and atop ice cream sundaes, has long been a source of confusion as to its true identity as a fruit.

Many people are surprised to know that they are cherries that have undergone the addition of sugars and ingredients to create the look and texture that we all love.

While they may not quite look or have the texture of fresh cherries, they are, in fact, real cherries indeed!

Are Candied Cherries and maraschino cherries the same?

Candied cherries are typically prepared by boiling fresh cherries in a sugar syrup until they are fully coated and preserved.

On the other hand, Maraschino cherries are made using a similar process but with an additional step of soaking the cherries in a mixture of sugar syrup and maraschino liqueur.

The result is that maraschino cherries have a softer texture and more complex flavor profile than candied cherries.

While both are popular toppings for cocktails and desserts, it is important to note that they are not interchangeable in recipes that require one or the other.
