One of the best ways to find an awesome pumpkin is to head to the pumpkin patch. It’s the best way to get a real pumpkin and support a local small business, too! (and don’t worry – if you don’t have a pumpkin patch nearby, getting a pumpkin at the local grocery store is a great idea as well!)
The perfect pumpkin can be different for each person, but if you want to carve, a larger pumpkin with a flatter bottom works best. That way, you can complete the easy steps to carve your pumpkin.

How can I preserve carved pumpkins for a little bit longer?
To keep your carved pumpkins from turning into mushy monsters too soon, here are some tried-and-true tips. With these tricks, you can usually stretch a carved pumpkin’s life to about 5–10 days (sometimes a little longer if the weather’s cool).
Clean thoroughly before carving
- Wash the outside with mild soap and water.
- Scoop out every bit of pulp and stringy insides—less gunk = slower mold growth.
Give it a bleach bath
- Mix 1 tablespoon bleach per quart of water.
- Submerge the pumpkin (or spray it inside and out). This kills bacteria and mold spores.
Dry completely
- Moisture speeds rot. Let it dry fully before displaying.
Seal it up
- Rub petroleum jelly, vegetable oil, or even clear spray sealant on the cut edges to slow shriveling.
Keep it cool
- Heat is a pumpkin’s worst enemy. Display in the shade during the day.
- If temps are warm, bring it inside at night or refrigerate it when not on display.
Hydrate when needed
- If your jack-o’-lantern starts to shrivel, soak it in a cold water bath for a few hours to rehydrate.
Avoid candles inside
- Heat from flames speeds up rotting. Use LED lights instead.
