Family Halloween Costume Ideas Everyone Can Agree On
Family Halloween costumes are the easiest way to get everyone dressed up without five separate debates about who is going as what. Pick one theme, let each person choose a character inside it, and the group photo mostly takes care of itself.
These ideas cover movie crews, classic monster mashups and themes that work whether your group is two grown-ups or a whole carload of cousins. For recipes, printables, movies and party ideas, visit my Halloween page.

The list is grouped by theme so you can find one that fits your family’s ages, sizes and patience level. If you need a decision tonight, start with the Quick Picks.

Pirates of the Caribbean Costumes from HalloweenCostumes.com
HalloweenCostumes.com sent us their Will Turner costume and Elizabeth Swann costume from Pirates of the Caribbean. Pirates might be the most forgiving family theme there is. The grown-ups go as the movie characters, the kids go as any pirate at all, and nobody has to match exactly.
Add a kid-sized pirate or two and you have a full crew. Add the dog in a bandana and you have a crew with a mascot.
The best part is these get a second year. Swap the theme and keep the costumes: pirates, mermaids and a kraken one year, then Peter Pan, Wendy and Captain Hook the next, with the dog as the crocodile or a parrot on someone’s shoulder.
Disclosure: HalloweenCostumes.com provided these costumes at no cost. All opinions are my own.
Movie and TV Family Costume Ideas
When everyone already knows the characters, the costumes can stay simple and people still get it from across the street.
Toy Story
Woody, Jessie, Buzz and the little green aliens give you a role for every size in the family. The dog is Slinky Dog by default.

The Addams Family
Black clothes, pale makeup and a lot of attitude. A hairy dog makes the best Cousin Itt you will ever see, and somebody gets to carry Thing around in a box.

Ghostbusters
Tan coveralls and a cardboard box proton pack for the busters, and one person in a white sheet as the ghost. Coveralls are also the easiest costume to throw over warm clothes.

Super Mario
Mario and Luigi for the grown-ups, then Princess Peach, Toad and Yoshi for everyone else. Overalls and colored caps do most of the work, so this one scales up to a whole carload of cousins.

The Wizard of Oz
Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion, plus the dog as Toto in a basket. Four people and a dog is the exact cast.

Punny Family Costume Ideas
Not every family costume needs to be elaborate. Some of the best ones are a plain T-shirt, a marker and a pun that makes people groan.
Black-Eyed Peas
Paint a big letter P on a plain T-shirt for everyone, then use a little makeup to give each person a black eye. It costs about as much as a pack of shirts, and you will spend all night explaining it to the grandparents.

Rock n’ Roll
Mom is the rock, as in a diamond, in something sparkly and white. Dad is the roll, as in a dinner roll in tan or brown (or a cinnamon roll if he wants the frosting), and a kid or the dog wears a big N’ in the middle. Stand in order for the photo or nobody gets it.

The Apple Doesn’t Fall Far From the Tree
The grown-ups dress as trees in brown with green leaves pinned on top, and the kids go as red apples. Every relative who sees you will say the line out loud, so you do not have to.

Holy Guacamole
Wear green with a brown felt circle for the pit, then add a halo made from a headband and gold pipe cleaners. The rest of the family can go as tortilla chips.

Peas in a Pod
The kids wear green with green balloons or pom-poms pinned on, and one grown-up wraps up in a green blanket as the pod. It works best while the kids are still small enough to fit next to you.

Emoji Family
Everyone wears yellow with a different emoji face: the laughing one, the eye roll, the heart eyes, the one with the sunglasses. Let each person pick the face that fits them best, then stand back while the family argues about who got typecast.

Would you like to save this?
Party Pooper
One person goes as the poop emoji, complete with a party hat and a noisemaker. Everyone else dresses as party guests with balloons and confetti. Volunteers for the main role are usually not hard to find.

Food Family Costume Ideas
Food costumes are made for groups because food comes in sets. One person alone is a hot dog. Four people are a cookout.
Hot Dog and Condiments
Put the actual dog in a hot dog bun costume and let the people be ketchup, mustard and relish. Plain red, yellow and green outfits with a cardboard bottle-cap hat are all you need.

The Four Seasons
Four people, four spice jars: salt, pepper, cinnamon and paprika. Big jar labels on plain shirts do the job, and you get to tell everyone you are the Four Seasons.

A Batch of Cookies
Each person is a different cookie. One smart cookie in glasses, one tough cookie in a leather jacket, one sugar cookie covered in sprinkles, and the dog as the fortune cookie.
Deviled Eggs
White shirts with a yellow felt circle in the middle, plus red devil horns for everyone. Carry an egg carton for the group photo.

M&M’s or Skittles
Everyone wears a different solid color with a white M or S on the front. Dress up a wagon as the candy bag, pile the kids in, and you are a whole bag of candy rolling down the street.

Game and Toy Family Costume Ideas
Board games and toy boxes already come with a set of matching pieces, which is most of the work of a group costume done for you.
The Game of Life
Everyone dresses as a peg in a solid pink or blue outfit with a round hat. Turn a wagon into the car with some cardboard and paint, then pull the kids along in it, or put the dog in the driver’s seat. A cardboard spinner makes it obvious.

Twister
The players wear white shirts covered in red, blue, yellow and green dots, and one grown-up wears the spinner on a sandwich board. The photos are even better if you actually play.

Box of Crayons
Each person picks a color and wears it head to toe with a pointed paper hat. Wrap a wagon in yellow and green poster board so it becomes the crayon box, load the little crayons inside, and the smallest one can be the broken crayon.

Building Bricks
Paint cardboard boxes in bright colors and glue plastic cups or paper circles on top for the studs. Line up together and you are one big brick wall.

How to Choose a Family Costume Theme
Start with what everyone will actually wear for a few hours. In the HalloweenCostumes.com 2026 Halloween survey, 30% of shoppers said comfort and fit matter most when buying a costume, up from 20% in 2024 and now ahead of quality. That tracks. An itchy costume gets abandoned by the second street.
Costumes were also the biggest Halloween expense in that survey, so it pays to pick pieces that get worn again. Almost half of the people surveyed (48%) wear costumes for parties, festivals and cosplay throughout the year, not just on October 31.
Sizing a whole family is easier than it used to be, too. 63% said there are now enough inclusive costume options, including plus-size, adaptive and maternity costumes, which matters when one theme has to fit everyone from the toddler to Grandpa.
Tips for Pulling Off a Group Costume
- Pick the theme first, then let each person choose their own character inside it.
- Check the size chart for every person, grown-ups included. Adult sizing varies a lot from brand to brand.
- Order early. Popular characters and in-between sizes sell out in October.
- Plan for your weather. Here on the Alabama Gulf Coast Halloween can still be hot, so breathable fabric wins.
- Give the littlest ones the simplest costume. The toddler does not need the five-piece set.
