These interesting facts about Montana for kids include the home to an eagle migration area, the Montana Yogo sapphire, and where dinosaur eggs were found.

Montana State Facts

Montana is in the northern United States and borders Canada. It’s known as The Treasure State and officially became the 41st state in 1889. The capital of Montana is Helena which has the 43rd highest population in the US. 

Fact One: Home to the Rocky Mountain Front Eagle Migration Area 

More eagles are seen in a single day in Montana than any other country. The Golden Eagle and the Bald Eagle are the two types of eagles you’ll find there. They are both huge raptors that eat squirrels, fish, rabbits, and prairie dogs.

Fact Two: The Montana Yogo Sapphire was found here 

The Montana Yogo Sapphire is the only North American gem included in the Crown Jewels of England. These precious stones are naturally bright and clear while most sapphires need to be heat treated to bring out their color.

Fact Three: Dinosaur Eggs were discovered at Egg Mountain 

Marion Brandvold found the first dinosaur eggs in 1978 near Choteau, Montana. They were later identified as eggs and the mountain they were found on was renamed Egg Mountain.

Fact Four: Triple Divide Peak 

Water flows to three oceans from the Triple Divide Peak in the Lewis Range of the Rocky Mountains. The streams flow to the Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, and Hudson Bay. It is the only place in America where there are three divides and one of only three in the world.

Fact Five: Largest Grizzly Bear Population 

Montana has the largest grizzly bear population In the lower 48 states. Bears live in meadows, forests, and plains. They don’t migrate because they hibernate in the winter. They are omnivores and eat meat as well as plants. These huge animals are adaptable and will roam to find food wherever they can.
