How to Keep Homeschooling When Sick!

Sharing is caring!

This time of year can be rough.  It’s cold season.  It’s flu season…and honestly, it seems like it should just be renamed “it’s everyone gets sick season”.

Depending on the weather, the noses and coughs may be active one week, while the next week may have everyone disinfecting their homes and battling those flu germs.  While it’s common that we all go through it, it definitely doesn’t make it any easier at times.

Having everyone sick in the house can really put a screeching halt on the day-to-day of the household.

The number one priority is to get everyone better, of course, but it is also important to not let everything else fall under the radar.

Now, add in another factor to consider when everyone is sick?  Homeschooling.

Homeschooling when sick can be difficult, but you have to keep pushing through.  Hopefully, these tips will help you to keep the children on track even though you feel like dirt!

Homeschooling When Sick

If you teach and educate your children in your home, and that home has everyone sick and under the weather, is it possible to keep up with your lesson plans and the daily activities that you have scheduled?  It can be, within reason.

How to Keep Homeschooling When Sick:

If you find that you are struggling to find ways to keep up with your homeschooling while everyone is sick, here are some suggestions to help you find that balance.

1. Think outside of your traditional lesson plans during this time.

While typically, your homeschool day may be planned down to the last detail, during times of sickness there may need to be some wiggle room to allow for a bit of resting and recovering as well.

If you have an interactive lesson planned prepared for the week about Science, save that for the following week when everyone will hopefully be on the mend.

Don’t scrap the Science lesson altogether, but swap it out for something that uses a bit less energy such as reading a book about inventors, or learning about science with an app on the laptop or tablet.

It may not be the ideal way that you are wanting to teach, but it is still ensuring that your child is staying active and engaged, while learning, during those times of you having to keep Homeschooling When Sick.

2.  Introduce a new topic to them that you haven’t studied before.

If your class day during the week is filled with Science, Math, English, and History, then think about taking the time during this illness period to learn about more social factors that your child will need to use and learn as they continue to grow older.

Teaching and learning communication skills are key!  Take the time to sit and snuggle with your little one, while talking about the importance of strong communication skills, listening skills, and body language.

Teaching them about the importance of positive interaction is a great lesson and learning opportunity that can be done right from the couch that everyone can rest on together!

3.  Make Your Homeschooling When Sick Day a Reading Day!

The great thing about books is that they are packed full of knowledge!

If the house is sick, the day may just need to be a day full of reading and relaxing, and that’s okay.  You can talk to them about the books that they are reading and work on their retaining and comprehensive skills that way as well.

Let your kids pick out a few fun books to mix in with their educational books, and get them a comfy reading nook all set up and ready to go!

4.  Swap out a weekday for a weekend day if necessary.

The beauty of homeschooling is that there can be a teensy-bit of flexibility in the days if needed.  Sometimes, sickness can really just wipe everyone out.

If you all need a day of recovering, allow that to happen and toy with the possibility of swapping out that school day with Saturday or Sunday instead.  That way, rest happens, and the lesson plan that was prepared still does as well.

It helps everyone by resting up and staying on track!

Homeschooling when sick can be a challenge, but it doesn’t have to be overly stressful.

Use the resources around you to supplement with activities throughout the day that are educational but still allow that much-needed rest.

If you are able to achieve getting your household better, and incorporating a little bit of learning here and then, then that is a win in the homeschool book!

Write down a list of independent activities that your kids can do while you are sick. This is a great beginning of the school year planning project. Put your list in a folder or your planner and it’s all set to go!
