Pennsylvania is a northern state with the Appalachian mountains running through it. It produces more than 75% of the world’s oil, half of the mushrooms grown in the United States are picked there, and has the world’s oldest still-operating roller coaster in the world. 

These ten food categories include three recipes from notable professional chefs and home chefs, with the recipe testing and dish development done for you. All you need to do is enjoy the wonderful combinations that make these dishes uniquely Pennsylvania.  

Philly Cheesesteak 

Thinly sliced steak sauteed with onions and bell peppers topped with melty cheese. It’s piled high in a toasted hoagie roll is a classic all over Pennsylvania and especially Philadelphia. 

2. Shoofly Pie 

This pie is made with cinnamon, nutmeg, butter, molasses, and pie crust. It’s a famous Pennsylvania recipe served all over the state at restaurants and potluck dinners. 

Scrapple 

This meat dish is made with pork, cornmeal, seasonings, onions, and celery. It’s then fried and drizzled with a sweet or savory topping depending on if you’re eating it for breakfast or dinner. 

4. Tomato Pie

Fresh tomatoes are piled on pizza dough, baked, and topped with fresh basil. It’s a very simple dish that is popular all over the state.  

5. Soft Pretzels 

 Hot, soft pretzels are easy to make at home. They’re baked and topped with cinnamon sugar, salt, cheese, sesame seeds, jalapeno slices, or everything bagel seasoning. 

        

 

Wedding Soup 

This soup is a traditional Italian dish. It’s made with meatballs, carrots, onions, celery, garlic, broth, small pasta, spinach, and parmesan cheese. It’s easy to make on a weeknight. 

7. Pierogies 

These pasta-filled dumplings are homemade. They’re filled with potatoes, onions, cream cheese, and seasonings. They are popular in states with a European influence. 

Fried Fish Sandwich 

Fresh fish battered and fried and topped with creamy horseradish sauce. It’s all packed between toasted buns is a delicious lunch.  

9. Mushroom Strudel 

Puff pastry is filled with mushrooms, cheese, sausage, and leeks. It’s is a delicious appetizer and famous Pennsylvania recipe.

10. Red Snapper Soup 

Red Snapper fish is a light, white fish that is amazing served in a vegetable soup filled with onions, tomatoes, carrots, celery, zucchini, potatoes, and fish stock. It’s refreshing and savory and easy to make right at home.
