Are squash and pumpkin the same?

They’re related, but not the same. Think of it this way: all pumpkins are squash, but not all squash are pumpkins.

  • Family: Both pumpkin and squash belong to the Cucurbitaceae family (the gourd family).
  • Pumpkin: A type of winter squash, usually round, orange, with firm flesh, often grown for cooking and decoration.
  • Squash: A broader category that includes both summer squash (like zucchini and yellow squash) and winter squash (like butternut, acorn, and pumpkin).
