Pumpkin has a naturally mild, slightly sweet, earthy flavor, so it pairs beautifully with both sweet and savory spices. Here are the best ones:
Sweet Spice Pairings
Cinnamon – the classic warm, cozy pumpkin partner.
Nutmeg – adds depth and a nutty sweetness.
Cloves – strong and aromatic, use sparingly.
Allspice – tastes like a blend of cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves.
Ginger – adds a little zesty kick to balance sweetness.
Cardamom – floral and citrusy, lovely in desserts.
Vanilla – enhances pumpkin’s natural sweetness.
Savory Spice Pairings
Sage – earthy and herby, great in soups or roasted pumpkin.
Thyme – adds a subtle woodsy flavor.
Rosemary – bold, fragrant, perfect with roasted pumpkin.
Cumin – brings a warm, slightly smoky flavor.
Coriander – adds a citrusy brightness.
Smoked Paprika – balances sweetness with a savory, smoky edge.
Curry Powder – creates a rich, complex flavor in soups or stews.

How do I know if canned pumpkin is really pumpkin and not squash?
Even if it’s technically “squash,” canned pumpkin is chosen to give you that classic pumpkin taste and texture in pies, soups, and desserts.

Check the Label
If it says “100% Pure Pumpkin”, it usually contains Dickinson pumpkin, a variety of squash that’s technically a pumpkin cultivar—just not the round, jack-o’-lantern type.
If it lists “squash” or “pumpkin & squash” in the ingredients, it’s a blend.
Look at the Brand
Libby’s dominates the market and uses their own strain of pumpkin (a type of squash, but for pie-making).
Generic or other brands sometimes use butternut or a mix.
Trust the Texture & Flavor
Canned pumpkin will almost never taste like carving pumpkins (which are stringy and watery).
Instead, it’s made from denser, sweeter varieties that are closer to squash in flavor.
