This month, we will journey through stories that highlight the power of a thankful heart. As part of the ongoing One Year Kids Bible Reading Plan, these lessons are crafted to be simple, interactive, and full of joy.

Our theme for November is “A Heart of Thanks,” focusing on how expressing gratitude brings us closer to God and to each other. Children will learn that thankfulness isn’t just for Thanksgiving Day but is a beautiful way to live every day.

A Heart of Thanks – Celebrating God’s Goodness

November is a season dedicated to giving thanks, making it an excellent opportunity to teach children about the biblical call to gratitude. The theme “A Heart of Thanks” guides families to discover why thankfulness is so important and how we can practice it daily. Using key Bible passages, we’ll explore stories and teachings that model a grateful spirit.

Our journey begins by examining praise and worship as a direct expression of gratitude to God for who He is and all He has done. We will see how characters in the Bible showed their thanks through songs and prayers.

Next, we will explore the story of Daniel, who prayed and gave thanks to God even in the face of great danger. This powerful example teaches children that we can be thankful in all circumstances, trusting in God’s faithfulness no matter what.

The plan then shifts to the blessings of family and community. We will look at verses that encourage us to love and appreciate one another, recognizing that the people in our lives are precious gifts from God.

Finally, we’ll connect these biblical lessons to the tradition of Thanksgiving, showing children that the holiday is rooted in the practice of thanking God for His provision.

Weekly Lesson Breakdown

Explore our November Kids Bible Reading Plan with this simple weekly guide focused on gratitude. Each week, your family will discover a new aspect of thankfulness through Bible readings, memory verses, and fun, hands-on activities.

This plan is designed to help children understand and express gratitude in meaningful ways.

Week 1 Plan – Giving Praise to God

Focus Verses: Psalm 100

Memory Verse: Psalm 100:4 – “Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name.”

Focus Idea: We thank God by praising Him.

Daily Activities and Resources

  • Monday: Read Psalm 100 together. Talk about the joyful words used in the psalm, like “shout,” “sing,” and “praise.” Discuss how singing songs to God is a way of thanking Him.
  • Tuesday: Create your own musical instruments. Use household items like paper plates for tambourines or rice in a bottle for shakers. Play your instruments while singing a favorite worship song.
  • Wednesday: Practice writing the memory verse, Psalm 100:4. Decorate the page with musical notes, happy faces, and bright, joyful colors to reflect the cheerful tone of the psalm.
  • Thursday: Make a “Praise and Thanks” list. On a large piece of paper, write down all the things you are thankful for about God—His love, His creation, His care for you.
  • Friday: Have a family praise party. Play upbeat worship music, dance, sing, and read your “Praise and Thanks” list aloud. End with a prayer of thanksgiving.

Week 2 Plan – Thankful in All Things

Memory Verse: Daniel 6:10 – “He got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before.”

Focus Idea: We can be thankful even when things are hard.

Daily Activities and Resources

  • Monday: Read the story of Daniel in the lions’ den from Daniel 6. Highlight that Daniel continued to pray and thank God three times a day, even when it was against the law and dangerous.
  • Tuesday: Act out the story of Daniel. Take turns playing Daniel, the king, and the lions. This helps children remember how brave Daniel was and how he trusted God.
  • Wednesday: Practice the memory verse, Daniel 6:10. Talk about what it means to have a routine of thankfulness, just like Daniel did.
  • Thursday: Create a “Prayer Paws” craft. Trace your child’s hand on paper and cut it out. Write things you can pray for on each finger. Fold the fingers down to look like praying hands (or paws).
  • Friday: Discuss a time when it was hard to feel thankful. Share how prayer and trusting God can help us find gratitude even in difficult situations. Pray together, thanking God for His protection and love.

Week 3 Plan – Thankful for Family and Friends

Focus Verses: 1 Thessalonians 5:11, Colossians 3:13

Memory Verse: 1 Thessalonians 5:11 – “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up.”

Focus Idea: We show thankfulness by loving and encouraging others.

Daily Activities and Resources

  • Monday: Read 1 Thessalonians 5:11 and Colossians 3:13. Talk about what it means to encourage, forgive, and love one another as a family.
  • Tuesday: Create a “Family Thankful Tree.” Draw a large tree trunk on paper and tape it to a wall. Cut out paper leaves and have each family member write things they are thankful for about each other on the leaves. Add them to the tree.
  • Wednesday: Write “Encouragement Notes” to each other. Give each person a small note with a kind word or a reason you are thankful for them. Hide them in lunchboxes or under pillows as a surprise.
  • Thursday: Practice the memory verse, 1 Thessalonians 5:11. Brainstorm practical ways you can “build each other up,” like helping with chores without being asked or giving a hug.
  • Friday: Have a family game night. As you play together, focus on being encouraging and having fun as a team. End the night by telling each person one reason you are glad they are in your family.

Week 4 Plan – The First Thanksgiving

Daily Activities and Resources

  • Monday: Read Deuteronomy 8:10. Talk about the history of Thanksgiving and how the Pilgrims celebrated a harvest festival to thank God for providing food after a difficult year.
  • Tuesday: Make a classic Thanksgiving craft, like handprint turkeys. On each feather, write something you are thankful for.

  • Thursday (Thanksgiving Day): Read the memory verse, 1 Chronicles 16:34, before your meal. Go around the table and have everyone share one thing they are most thankful for this year.
  • Friday: Create a “Blessing Jar” for the coming year. Decorate a jar and place it somewhere visible. Throughout the year, add notes about good things that happen, and read them together next Thanksgiving.
