DIY School Supplies using Recycled Materials

Sharing is caring!

Have you started to feel a bit overwhelmed yet with the back-to-school preparations and endless lists of school supplies needed? These DIY Recycled School Supplies are fun to make and make back-to-school shopping slightly less expensive!

Summer is a time for fun in the sun, but as summer starts to wind down, parents need to begin preparing their kids mentally for the return to school. A great way to introduce them to the idea of school is with some fun back-to-school art projects! This will help keep costs down and minimize your family’s environmental impact.

It’s so much fun to show the kids that they can take something new or used, and turn it into something useful and brand new!

What are good craft supplies to keep on hand for a recycling project at home?

There are so many household items that you can utilize. You can use old plastic bottles, a plastic cup, egg cartons, plastic bags, tin cans, plastic bottle caps, plastic water bottles, paper plates, cardboard boxes, paper scraps, aluminum cans, old CDs, old tires, and anything else that can be used in a fun way.

The list can really go on and on! If you have a creative mind or just want to try making something new, look around your house and see what strikes your fancy to repurpose.

Encourages Creative Thinking
Kids learn to see everyday objects—like boxes, cans, or jars—not just for their original purpose, but as materials for crafts, toys, or storage. This fosters out-of-the-box thinking and resourcefulness.

Builds Environmental Awareness
Repurposing teaches children that not everything needs to be thrown away. They gain a better understanding of sustainability, waste reduction, and the importance of reusing before recycling.

Promotes Problem-Solving and Independence
Turning trash into treasure often requires problem-solving. Kids experiment with ideas, figure out how to build things, and gain confidence from creating something useful or fun on their own.

Saves Money and Reduces Waste
It shows kids (and families) how to make the most of what they have—important lessons in thriftiness, budgeting, and living with intention.

Strengthens Fine Motor and Planning Skills
Repurposing often involves cutting, gluing, taping, and assembling—practical skills that also support hand-eye coordination, patience, and project planning.
