Making and eating brownies is so much fun, but these brownie mix add ins really take them over the top!

When I’m at the store and see boxed brownies for a $1, you better believe that I’m stocking up. However, when it comes down to making boxed brownies straight from the box, it can be kind of boring. I prefer to add different bits to make it even more decadent. I have tried a few things over the years and many have been successful.

Check out some of these ways in which you can change up the boring old brownie box. But, not before you check out these Boxed Brownie Mix Hacks first!

Why are brownies such a popular dessert?

Brownies have been popularized around the world, thanks in part to their delightful simplicity. Preparing a brownie is often as simple as mixing a few ingredients together and popping them in the oven – making them an ideal dessert for those short on time or with limited culinary skills.

Brownies are also incredibly versatile; they can satisfy those who prefer moist and cake-like desserts, while others may favor crunchy and chewy varieties.

The ease of adding tasty additional ingredients means that even with the same recipe, countless iterations can be created to suit any palette.

Ultimately, it’s no surprise that brownies remain an ever-popular treat!

How do I know when brownies are done baking?

The best way to check if brownies are done baking is by inserting a wooden skewer or cake tester into the center.

If it comes out clean without any wet batter sticking to it, then the brownies are ready.

Another test you can use is lightly pressing the top of the brownie with your finger. If it springs back easily and feels slightly firm, then that means they are baked through.

Can I freeze brownies after they are baked?

Baked brownies are the perfect indulgence for any special occasion or just because! The great news is, if you find yourself with too many of these deliciously decadent treats, there’s no need to worry – baked brownies can be frozen and enjoyed later.

Freezing brownies is a simple process that will ensure they stay as fresh and tasty after freezing as when they were first made.

Simply put your cooled off brownies in a plastic bag or an airtight container, remove all the air, and pop them in the freezer.

When you’re ready to enjoy again, let them sit on the countertop until they return to room temperature.

Once they’ve thawed through, you’ll have this irresistible dessert to enjoy again and again!

Brownie Mix Add Ins

While the chocolate flavor of the brownies is good, there’s always SOMETHING that you can add to your prepared brownie dessert, right?! These brownie mix add ins are some of my favorites!

Fresh or Frozen Fruit

You may not believe it, but adding in small bits of frozen fruits can turn brownies into something amazing. My favorite is to chop up strawberries really small and add them to the brownie batter. You can add blueberries, raspberries, and any other fruit your heart desires. You can also use fresh or frozen fruit to help bring your brownies to life.

Candy Mix-Ins or Chopped Candy Bars

Raise your hand if you love chocolate. I know I do and so does every other member of my family. If you really want to take your brownies to the next level, then it’s time to whip out the big guns. Using candy mix-ins and candy bars chopped up are amazing.

I love to mix it up and throw in some white chocolate chips or even some bits of dark chocolate. When you’re biting into a brownie and taste a piece of Snickers or Twix in it, your life will change for the better. In fact, you will probably never go back to regular brownies ever again.

Various Nuts

Want to know another way to spruce up boring old brownies? Try putting various nuts in your brownies. You can stick with one type of nut per pan of brownies or you can put a variety of nuts in the pan.

A few nut options to try in your brownies include:

  • walnuts
  • peanuts
  • pecans
  • cashews
  • hazelnuts
  • macadamia nuts
  • chestnuts
  • almonds.

I love how many different types of nuts there are.

And this add in is so simple to put into any brand of brownie mix! (My kids actually like this add in so much, I make it in a family sized pan!

Creamy Ingredient Options

I know that many of us like our creamy brownies. I can’t tell you how many creamy ingredient options I have put together when it comes to creamy ingredients. Of course, a favorite creamy brownie version around here is to add peanut butter to our brownies.

However, we’ve also been known to add cream cheese and even marshmallow cream. My mouth is watering just thinking about all the delicious options.  (You can seriously create an awesome pan of s’mores brownies easily this way! You can easily omit the graham crackers and no one will notice!)

Seriously think outside the box (brownie box, ha!) with this one…Just by adding is some fun and creamy ingredients, you could create chocolate peanut butter brownies, cheesecake brownies and even brownies topped with ice cream!

Jellies and Jams

Last, but not least, let’s not forget about the way we can make brownies even more amazing…with jellies and jams. Choose your favorite jam or jelly and put it in your brownies.

I prefer to allow the jam or jelly to bake in with the brownies. When you pull them out of the oven, you get this yummy tasty version of brownies you just can’t buy in a box.
