What is The Book of Proverbs?

Proverbs states its theme very early in the book: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge” (Proverbs 1:7). The fear of the Lord refers to our viewing Him with the respect He deserves.

It means living our lives in light of what we know of Him, holding Him in the highest estimation, and depending on Him with humble trust. Only then, Proverbs teaches, will we discover knowledge and wisdom (see also 9:10).

Proverbs is not merely an anthology but a “collection of collections” relating to a pattern of life which lasted for more than a millennium. It is an example of the Biblical wisdom tradition, and raises questions of values, moral behavior, the meaning of human life, and right conduct.

Wisdom and Knowledge. This is what Proverbs for Students is all about: putting the “wis” with the “dom.” It’s all about wisdom, knowledge, and understanding — and it all begins with fearing God.

Proverbs accomplishes something no other biblical book does: it simply compiles numerous short instructions for living an effective life on earth.

English Proverbs

“Rome wasn’t built in a day” is just one of many common English Proverbs that you can use as inspirational quotes.

Some of my other favorite English Proverbs include the one about “The grass is always greener on the other side” and the one about “people in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones”.

As a Mom, I am always doling out these historical words of wisdom to my children. Am I alone in this?

I would be remiss if I didn’t also mention the super popular:

Japanese Proverb

The Japanese people are known for their rich culture and deep observations of life and people. Consequently, they are also known for their ancient wisdom.

Take the famous, albeit fictional, Mr. Miyagi of Karate Kid for example. He was full of amazing quotes like:

No such thing as bad student, only bad teacher!

Mr. Miyagi of Karate Kid

One of my favorite Japanese Proverbs is “pearl to a pig” which means, to me, be careful of giving precious things to people that don’t appreciate them.

This could be physical things or not – like, don’t give your heart away to someone that doesn’t love you!
