Color Land Run and Write (Candy Land)

Sharing is caring!

Having a two and three year-old in the house, means we play a lot of the Candy Land game. I love classic games that I remember playing when I was little. Though the sit down Candy Land board game is fun, my boys needed an adaptation that involved moving around. We’ve also been working a lot on writing activities for kids. So, we came up with this Color Land Run and Write. This game develops gross motor skills, fine motor skills, literacy skills and math skills! That’s a lot of skill building for one game!

Color Land Run and Write

To get your fun writing activities game started, here are all the steps to follow!

Object:

Work together to complete all the task cards.

Supplies:

Color Land Run and Write supplies for your game!

  • playing cards (download your free color land cards here) We printed them on cardstock, cut them apart and laminated for durability.
  • sidewalk chalk (red, blue, yellow, green, purple and orange)
  • colored cones (red, blue, yellow, green, purple and orange) We found them at Jo Ann Fabric and Craft Store. Oriental Trading Company also carries them.

Setup:

On the driveway or sidewalk spread out the colored cones. Place the corresponding sidewalk chalk next to each cone. Create a starting line and place your playing cards face down next to the line.

Gameplay:

color card writing
The player wearing the most colors goes first. The first player turns over the top card and identifies the color. The player then runs to the corresponding color cone and draws the shape, number or letter displayed on the card with the sidewalk chalk near the cone. It’s such a fun way to practice writing! The player then returns to the start line. Players continue to take turns selecting a card, running and drawing until interest is lost. Everyone is a winner for practicing their skills!

This game is perfect for toddlers and preschoolers. It can easily be adapted for older children too. Writing activities could include playing cards that have sight words, spelling words, math problems or patterns on them.
