Sensory bins and bottles are very similar, but bins have more space, which allows for more creativity and play!

How are sensory bottles and sensory bins different?

Sensory bottles are compact, sealed containers filled with items youngsters can swirl, shake, or observe. They are excellent for calming overstimulated children and promoting focus, as the visual movement inside the bottle offers a soothing, meditative experience.

On the other hand, sensory bins are open containers filled with various materials—like rice, beans, or small toys—that children can touch, sort, and manipulate. While sensory bins encourage hands-on, tactile exploration and imaginative play, sensory bottles are more limited to visual and auditory stimulation.

How do I store a sensory bin once the kids are done playing with it for the day?

Properly storing a sensory bin after playtime can save you time and keep the materials fresh for future use. Make sure all components are clean and dry. Store the materials in a sturdy, airtight container to prevent spills and keep them dust-free.

Label the container with the type of sensory bin (e.g., “Peppa Pig”) for easy access later. If the materials are not reusable, dispose of them and wash any tools or toys included in the bin before putting them away.

Designate a specific shelf or storage space for your sensory bins to keep them organized and ready to inspire the next round of imaginative play.

What are the benefits of sensory play for kids?

Sensory play offers many benefits for children, supporting their physical, cognitive, and emotional development.

Engaging activities that stimulate the senses—such as touching, smelling, hearing, and seeing—help strengthen neural pathways in the brain, fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Sensory play improves fine motor skills as children manipulate objects, like molding clay or pouring sand, enhancing hand-eye coordination.

On an emotional level, it provides a calming experience, helping kids regulate their emotions and reduce anxiety. Most importantly, sensory play encourages creativity and curiosity, allowing children to explore the world around them in new and imaginative ways.
