Keep Your Children Entertained in the Car #C2S12

Summer Travel can be a bit daunting, as Vanessa knows.  This guest post is a must read for anyone who spends more than 10 minutes in the car with their children.

5 Things to Keep Stocked in the Car to Keep Your Children Entertained.

1Summer is road-trip season, and while getting there may be half the fun, anyone who has children knows this is not always the case. Most children find long car rides dull and get bored quickly. To help them pass the time, and help you have a peaceful ride, consider stocking these things in the car for your next road trip. Keep them in a reusable shopping bag in the trunk when you’re not using it, so you won’t accidentally forget it at home.

1. Coloring book and crayons – coloring books keep children entertained for hours, and it lets their creativity flourish. Pick up a few books with different themes at the dollar store to keep them from getting bored, and of course, the as far as crayons go – the more colors the better.

2. Audible books/sing-along CD’s – Keep kids entertained by switching off the radio and putting on a “book on tape” children love a good story, so pick out a few from the store or library that you will think they like (Harry Potter is a great choice – good for lots of hours on the road). If you don’t want to listen to the story as well, consider downloading a book onto your MP3 player and letting thins listen to it using headphones. Sing-along tapes are also great as long as you don’t mind listening to your kids happily sing for a few hours. Pick out some tapes from their favorite Disney movies which often have great songs in them. You may even find yourself singing along. 2

3. Travel board games and playing cards – many popular board games such as Guess Who, Battle Ship, Connect Four etc. have been made travel size and are a great way to pass away the hours. If your children are fans of trivia style games, just bring a stack of the question cards – you don’t really need the actual board or playing pieces. Also consider travel bingo where instead of the squares being filled with numbers they are filled with things you see on the road “transport truck.” Card games are another great thing to pack because you can play so many different games with them.

4. Snacks – snacks are a favorite for passing the time, and they also can save you time by cutting down on stops when your kids get hungry. Make sure to pick healthy and durable snacks if you’ll be storing them in the car. Think juice boxes, water bottles, granola bars, trail mix, fruit snacks etc.

5. Portable DVD player – if all else fails consider packing a portable DVD player to ensure a peaceful ride. Prices have come down significantly so you can get one for a great price. Make sure to also stock extra batteries and headphones.

Keeping these items in your car will help stop your children from asking “Are we there yet?” every twenty minutes. Safe travels!

Kelli - these are great ideas I remember being a nanny in a large city (way back when) and I would have to keep the kids entertained everyday for 40 minutes to and from school, mind you we had no portable dvd players back then:-)

Great tips. I just bought a magnetic paper doll kit for my granddaughter to play with in the car. We always bring books along too.
