Why are fritters called fritters?

Fritters have delighted us for centuries, yet do you know why we call them fritters? The word “fritter” comes from the Latin “frictura,” meaning “that which is fried.”

Fritters were traditionally made by frying batter or dough in hot oil, hence the name. Over time, fritter recipes have expanded to include various ingredients such as fruits, vegetables, and seafood.

Whether you prefer sweet or savory fritters, this crispy and satisfying treat is always a pleasure.

The origin of this tasty dish is unclear, yet its name highlights fried food’s timeless appeal.

Do fritters have to be fried?

Fritters are a beloved dish across many cultures and cuisines, known for their versatility and crispy texture.

While traditional fritters are typically fried in oil to achieve their signature crunch, there are certainly alternative methods to cooking these delectable treats.

Many recipes offer oven-baked options, using a non-stick cooking spray or brushing the fritters lightly with oil to achieve a golden brown exterior. Some innovative chefs have also experimented with air fryers or grilling cakes, leading to unique and healthier options.

Ultimately, whether fritters must be fried or not may depend on personal preference, but it’s clear that exploring other cooking methods can yield delicious and nutritious results.

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ cups all purpose flour
  • ¼ cup white granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 ½ teaspoons cinnamon
  • 2 eggs
  • cup milk
  • 3 tablespoons applesauce
  • 2 diced fuji or granny smith apples dice them small

Glaze Ingredients

  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • ¼ cup milk
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  • Clean and cut the apples into small pieces.
  • Add the oil to a frying pan and heat it over medium-high heat.
  • Add the sugar, flour, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt to a bowl. Whisk.
  • Make a well in the middle of the dry ingredients and add the milk, applesauce, and eggs. Whisk to form a thick batter.
  • Pour the apples in and fold them together.
  • Add 1/4 cup of the batter into the hot oil. Spread it slightly in the oil and cook it for 2 minutes on each side or until the fritter is deep golden brown.
  • Remove them from the oil and put them on a paper towel to drain excess oil. Repeat to cook all fritters.
  • Combine the cinnamon, powdered sugar, and brown sugar in a bowl to make the glaze. Whisk to combine.
  • Add the vanilla and milk and whisk. If you need to thin it, you can add a tad bit more milk.
  • Add parchment paper to a baking sheet and put a cooling rack on top.
  • Take each fritter and dip it into the glaze. Flip it over to coat the entire thing, then shake off any excess.
  • Place each one on the cooling rack and let the glaze set for 15 minutes.
