What’s on the Printable

It is one page with four rows. Each row has two groups of Thanksgiving pictures, A and B, and kids decide which group has more. Short on purpose. Once they can do this without counting on their fingers, they are ready for the greater than and less than signs.

How to Teach Greater Than and Less Than

  • Start with words, not symbols. More, fewer, the same.
  • Count each group out loud, then ask which pile is bigger.
  • Bring in the hungry alligator. Its mouth always opens toward the bigger group, because it wants more turkey.
  • Only then write the sign between the two groups.

Fun Ways to Use This Printable

Draw a Big Turkey and a Little Turkey

Flip the page over and have kids draw one big turkey and one small one, then add the sign so the alligator eats the big one.

Make Your Own Problems

Once they get it, write two numbers and let them fill in the sign. Then let them write a problem for you. They love catching you being wrong.

Thanksgiving Number Cards

Write numbers on index cards and flip two at a time. Whoever names the bigger number first keeps both. Same skill, much faster, a little louder.

Use the hungry alligator. Its open mouth always points toward the bigger number because it wants to eat the most. Kids get it in about two minutes and remember it for years.

Just one, with four rows to compare. It is quick enough to do in one sitting, which is exactly why it works the week of Thanksgiving.
