    Tips for Making Gingerbread:

Make sure to follow the recipe. Gingerbread isn’t a super-finicky thing to make, but let’s be very clear: It’s still a bread.

And, as with all breads, you do have to make sure to follow the directions. If it says to use hot water, don’t use lukewarm water–make sure it’s hot, but not boiling water, just hot.

The same goes with the spices. To make the traditional ginger-flavor you’re looking for with a gingerbread recipe, you really need to make sure you’re measuring your spices correctly. Do not just “put a dash” or you’ll be throwing out your gingerbread cookies in a heartbeat.

If you can, absolutely serve warm. Gingerbread warm is an absolutely huge treat. Gingerbread cake and iced gingerbread cookies may not be able to be served warm, but if you can….oooohhh…

Here’s some additional tips I like to make gingerbread by:

    • If the recipe calls for a toothpick inserted in the center to come out clean, do not pull the gingerbread out to check it–do it in the oven, if possible because the gingerbread will fall.
    • Prep your baking sheets with parchment paper unless the recipe calls for it. If you use cooking spray when it’s not called for, you could easily burn the edges of your winter treat.
    • Same goes with butter–don’t use margarine, if it calls for butter. And don’t let the butter melt if it calls for room temperature butter, because the butter actually helps the baked good retain it’s shape.
    • Don’t put your gingerbread into the oven early! Let the oven preheat completely before you put it in the prepared pan and bake it. If the recipe calls for you to preheat oven to 350 degrees, the oven itself can get much hotter than that while it’s getting to that temperature, so it could burn or simply melt your recipe.
    • Top all gingerbread treats with whipped cream. It is a law.

These answers cover a few common questions about baking and storing gingerbread treats.

Gingerbread typically combines ginger with warm spices such as cinnamon and cloves, plus molasses or another sweetener. Exact ingredients vary by recipe.

Cool them completely, then use an airtight container. Softer cakes may have different refrigeration needs than cookies, so follow the individual recipe.
