Preschoolers are at a critical juncture in their cognitive development. After spending their early years largely acquiring motor skills, they are now beginning to develop the ability to think symbolically. This allows them to understand that objects can represent other things, which is a fundamental step in the development of language and mathematical abilities.
Crafting activities are an excellent way to encourage this type of thinking. By working with their hands to create objects that are functionally identical to other objects, preschoolers can begin to understand that one object can stand in for another.
In addition, crafts can also help preschoolers to develop fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. As a result, crafting activities offer a unique opportunity to support the cognitive development of preschoolers.

Good morning,
thank you so much for your amazing content.
As an early literacy specialist I work with a very wide age range. The activities you share are easy to make fun and challenging to all those I work with.
I’ve begun working on a letter a week.
One of my favorite activities is using painters tape on cardstock. I create a letter using the tape. For letter M we did marble painting. When the creation dries kids remove the tape revealing the letter M. For I we painted with ice paints I made with liquid watercolors in ice cube trays. Once the creations were dry we added insect stamps for lower case i I made using wooden bug stickers from the $Tree and winecorks. The kids painted the stampers with tempera paints and stamped them on their letter I work. Emphasis is on the sounds of the letters.
These techniques use all the senses. When a child learns actively they the memory is stored as a pleasure and remembered.
Have fun playing and learning.
Miss Sue
Thank you so much for your kind words, Miss Sue! I’m thrilled to hear that you find my content amazing and that the activities I share are beneficial to the children you work with as an early literacy specialist. Your letter-a-week approach sounds fantastic, and I love the creative activities you’ve come up with for each letter.
Using painters tape on cardstock to create letters and incorporating different painting techniques like marble painting and ice paints is a wonderful way to engage children and make the learning process fun and interactive. Adding in insect stamps for the lowercase “i” is a clever touch as well. It’s great to hear that these activities help emphasize the sounds of the letters while engaging multiple senses.
I completely agree with you that when children learn actively and have fun, the memory is stored as a pleasurable experience and is more likely to be remembered. Thank you for sharing your expertise and encouraging others to have fun while playing and learning. Keep up the fantastic work, Miss Sue!
