Japan – Women Give Chocolates (Honmei and Giri-Choco)

Women in Japan give chocolates to men on Valentine’s Day. Two types are exchanged—Honmei-choco (romantic chocolates) and Giri-choco (friendly chocolates). On March 14th, men return the favor with gifts on White Day.

France – Romantic Love Letters

Valentine’s Day in France is celebrated with love letters, cards, and romantic gestures. Historically, there was une loterie d’amour, a matchmaking lottery for singles, though this custom was discontinued.

Denmark – Snowdrop Love Notes

Danes exchange pressed white flowers called snowdrops instead of roses. They also anonymously send Gaekkebrev, humorous, or poetic love notes, keeping the recipient guessing the sender’s identity.

Germany – Pigs as Symbols of Love
