Fairytale Quotes for Kids

Sharing is caring!

Sharing inspirational quotes & sayings with my kids really gets me excited. But I’ve got a secret favorite: Fairytale Quotes for Kids!

You know, those old fairytales we all know by heart? They’re like treasure chests of wisdom, hiding between talking animals and magic spells. It’s wild how much good stuff is packed into stories about glass slippers and beanstalks.

As a parent, I’ve noticed these quotes are like little sparks of inspiration. They help our kids dream big, grow as people, and bravely face tough stuff. And you know what? They’re perfect for starting those essential conversations about values and big ideas.

How about we explore some of these magical fairytale quotes together? They’ll capture your kids’ imaginations – and maybe even teach us grown-ups a thing or two along the way!

Fairytale Quotes for Kids

These fairytale quotes make storytime more meaningful! They’re short and snappy – perfect for kids with the attention span of a goldfish (no judgment, we’ve all been there). But they’re packed with enough wisdom to get those little minds thinking.

The quotes in this post are from some lesser-known fairytales (Oops, except for one!).. full of great lessons. They had me thinking, “How did I miss these growing up?” While these stories are not as famous as Cinderella or Snow White, the magic and meaning they impart are none less. I’ve picked out some you and your kids will love.

The Brave Little Tailor: Courage in Small Packages

Seven at one blow!

-The Brave Little Tailor

The brave little tailor’s boast packs more punch than he realizes. He’s just swatted some pesky flies, but his words take on their own life.

Folks hear “seven at one blow” and picture slain giants, not squashed bugs. His small win suddenly looks huge to everyone else. We can all relate to this mixing up of victories, big and small.

I use this to encourage my kids to cheer on their everyday triumphs. Tying shoelaces or sounding out a tricky word might seem tiny, but they’re worth celebrating.

The tailor’s tale also sparks good talks about honesty. He lets others believe something untrue and ends up in hot water.

It’s fun to explore why we should be proud of our real achievements, not puffed-up versions. Ultimately, our genuine wins, no matter how small, are always worth more than exaggerated tales.

The world belongs to the brave.

-Anonymous

This saying captures the spirit of “The Brave Little Tailor” story, though it’s not directly from it. The tale shows how bravery and wit lead to great success.

Courage comes from the heart, not physical might. I love sharing this idea with my kids. We talked about times they felt scared but acted anyway. These moments show what real bravery looks like.

The tailor’s story teaches us a valuable lesson. Success often comes from being clever and quick-thinking. His small size and elegant moves become assets. He outsmarts giants, unicorns, and wild boars.

This proves that sharp minds beat raw strength. It shows us to value our unique traits, even when we feel small.

The Little Mermaid: Finding Your Voice

But a mermaid has no tears, and therefore she suffers so much more.

-The Little Mermaid

As beings who live in the sea, mermaids can’t cry, so they feel pain more deeply.

Imagine holding in all your sadness without a way to let it out. That’s what the little mermaid goes through. She can’t shed tears to release her emotions, so her pain stays bottled up inside, making everything hurt more.

That’s why I explain to my children that it’s okay to cry when they’re upset, sad, or hurt. We talk about healthy ways to show feelings. Bottling them up only makes things worse.

We even play emotional guessing games together. It helps us learn to spot and express different feelings. This quote is a great starting point for these important talks with children about emotional health.

But if you take away my voice, what is left for me?

-The Little Mermaid

Your voice is more than just words. It’s the core of who you are, your thoughts and feelings, your very identity.

When the Little Mermaid asks what’s left if her voice is taken, she asks who she’ll be without it. Losing your voice means losing a big part of yourself.

The story warns us about giving up too much to fit in somewhere new. The mermaid leaves her home and family, silences herself, and ignores her pain. She loses her true self, trying to belong in a world that isn’t hers.

But we can learn from her.

We should value our voices and use them to stand up for ourselves and others.

There are many ways to express ourselves, even without speaking. The important thing is to stay true to who we are and what we believe in.

The Ugly Duckling: Embracing Who You Are

I never dreamed of such happiness as this, while I was an ugly duckling.

-The Ugly Duckling

Remember feeling like you didn’t fit in? That’s precisely how our duckling friend felt. He had no idea what a fantastic life was waiting for him.

Sometimes, we’re so caught up in our flaws that we can’t see our potential. But what makes us different is often what makes us special. The duckling was always a swan. He just didn’t know it yet.

I ask my kids to think of things they like about themselves that aren’t about their appearance. It’s a great exercise in building confidence and appreciating their unique qualities, which are their superpowers.

And just like the duckling, we all have hidden strengths waiting to shine. Being kind to others helps, too. You never know who might be struggling to see their awesomeness.

Ugly Duckling Adjacent:

There is nothing in a caterpillar that tells you it’s going to be a butterfly.

-R. Buckminster Fuller

This one isn’t directly from “The Ugly Duckling,” but it fits the theme perfectly! I love using this quote to discuss how we all change and grow.

Look at a caterpillar. You’d never guess it becomes a butterfly. Life surprises us like that.

We’re all changing, even when we can’t see it happening. To illustrate this to my kids, we look at pictures of them as babies and talk about how much they’ve changed already.

Inside us lie hidden talents waiting to bloom. Like the ugly duckling, we might not know our true potential yet. What matters most is how we treat others and who we are deep down.

Kindness and good character shine brighter than any outward appearance. As we grow, we discover new parts of ourselves. Our journey of change never really ends.

The Emperor’s New Clothes: Honesty and Critical Thinking

Now the Emperor’s new clothes are ready for him.

The Emperor’s New Clothes

The swindlers in Anderson’s tale are up to no good. They’ve devised a scheme to fool the emperor and line their pockets. With a mix of smooth talk and empty promises, they’ve convinced everyone they’re making amazing clothes.

But there aren’t any clothes at all!

They’re just pretending to work, knowing they’re pulling a fast one on the whole town.

This tale gets you thinking about honesty and trust. Sometimes, people might try to trick us for their gain or just to laugh.

When this is up for storytime, I use it to discuss handling situations where someone might lie with my kids. We brainstorm ways to respond if they think someone isn’t telling the truth.

I remind them that it’s always okay to approach me or another trusted adult if they’re unsure about something.

But he hasn’t got anything on.

The Emperor’s New Clothes

A child’s innocent words can shake the foundations of collective delusion. In Anderson’s tale, everyone pretends to see the emperor’s nonexistent clothes out of fear or pride.

The little one, free from such concerns, simply states the obvious. It’s a perfect example of how honesty can cut through lies and pressure to conform.

I love using this story to talk with my kids about thinking for themselves. We played a game where I said something silly like, “The sky is green today!” They have to decide whether to agree or tell me I’m wrong. It’s fun and helps them practice standing up for what they see and know.

By encouraging this kind of critical thinking early on, we’re giving them tools to navigate peer pressure and stay true to themselves as they grow up. And let’s be honest, we adults could use this reminder sometimes, too!

The Elves and the Shoemaker: Kindness and Gratitude

He was astounded, and knew not what to say to it.

-The Elves and the Shoemaker

Imagine finding a magical surprise on your work table. That’s what happened to the poor shoemaker in this story. He woke up to find perfectly crafted shoes made by tiny elves while he slept.

The man was so shocked he couldn’t even speak!

Do you know that feeling when something incredible hits you out of nowhere? That’s what the shoemaker felt. It’s fine to be shocked when good things happen. Sometimes, help shows up in ways we never saw coming.

When telling your kids this story, ask them about times they were surprised by someone being nice. It’s a fun way to chat about all the good stuff that pops up in life, even the little things. Kids love sharing their stories, which helps them think about being thankful for surprises.

The little men have made us rich, and we really must show that we are grateful for it.

-The Elves and the Shoemaker

Now, picture the shoemaker and his wife after nights of elf magic. Those little helpers worked tirelessly, making beautiful shoes that brought in lots of money.

The wife knows they owe everything to these tiny friends. She wants to do more than just say thanks. She wants to show genuine gratitude.

This is a perfect chance to teach your kids about giving back. When someone’s kind to us, it feels good to return the favor. You could ask your children how they might thank someone who helped them.

Talk about different ways to show appreciation, from simple words to thoughtful actions. The elves’ kindness started a chain reaction of goodwill. By paying it forward, we can create a ripple of kindness that spreads far beyond ourselves.

How to Use These Quotes in Everyday Life

These fairytale quotes aren’t just for storytime. They can be part of your everyday life, too!

Here are some fun ways to weave them into your family routines:

Quote of the Day: Start the morning by sharing a quote at breakfast. Ask your kids what it means and how they might use its lesson that day.

Craft Projects: Write out favorite quotes and let your kids decorate them. Hang these up as colorful reminders of important lessons.

Car Ride Conversations: Long car rides are perfect for deeper discussions. Pick a quote and discuss how it relates to something happening in your life.

Problem-Solving Tool: When your child faces a challenge, remind them of a relevant quote. It can help them see the situation from a new perspective.

Family Movie Nights: After watching a fairytale movie, discuss how the characters showed traits like bravery or honesty. Compare their actions to the quotes you’ve learned.

Remember, we don’t want our kids to memorize these quotes simply. We want to be able to start conversations, encourage critical thinking, and help them internalize positive values.

Wrapping Up Our Fairytale Journey

Who knew that stories about talking animals and magic beans could teach us so much about life?

We’ve dug into tales that aren’t your usual Cinderella fare and struck gold. They’ve got everything – courage, being yourself, telling the truth, not giving up, and speaking your mind. It’s big but served in bite-sized pieces that even a five-year-old can chew on.

What will get you is how these quotes pop up when you least expect it. When your kid stands up to a playground bully and hits you with, “I was being brave like the little tailor, Mom!” you’ll nearly fall over.

So go on, embrace your inner fairytale nerd. Use these quotes to kick off conversations, comfort others, and inspire them. You’re not just sharing stories—creating memories, teaching life lessons, and maybe even learning a thing or two yourself.
