What kid doesn’t like playing with play dough? It’s soft, squishy, and a fantastic sensory play experience for little hands! Did you know you can make your own play dough? It’s easy! If you’ve been wondering how to make play dough, give one of these play dough recipes a try!

You and your kids will love whipping up this DIY play dough with common household ingredients. With so many scents, flavors, and textures, you can make a different play dough recipe for every day of the month!

The fun part about making your own play dough is that there are so many varieties and ways to do it! The list below offers a variety of options that will provide your children with hours of fun!

How does play dough strengthen fine motor skills?

Play dough strengthens fine motor skills by engaging the small muscles in the hands and fingers through tactile, hands-on manipulation. Here’s how:

Squeezing and Rolling

Kids use their fingers, palms, and wrists to roll, flatten, squish, and squeeze play dough. These repetitive actions help build hand strength, improve grip, and develop endurance for tasks like writing and cutting.

Pinching and Molding

Pinching off small pieces or molding shapes improves finger dexterity and precision—key skills necessary for tasks such as holding a pencil, buttoning clothes, or tying shoelaces.

Using Tools

Using cutters, rolling pins, or scissors with play dough encourages bilateral coordination (using both hands together) and promotes tool control, which is vital for classroom tasks.

Improves Hand-Eye Coordination

Whether shaping letters or building pretend food, play dough requires children to coordinate what they see with how they move their hands.

How do I store play dough so it won’t dry out?

Use an Airtight Container

Store play dough in a sealed plastic container, sealable bag, or reusable silicone pouch. Press out as much air as possible to lock in moisture.

Wrap in Plastic First (Optional)

For extra protection, wrap the dough in plastic wrap before putting it in the container—especially homemade dough.

Keep It Cool and Dry

Store the container in a cool, dry place, away from heat or sunlight, which can accelerate the drying process.

Add a Damp Paper Towel (If Needed)

If the dough feels slightly dry, place a damp (not wet) paper towel inside the container to help restore moisture.

Wash Hands Before Use

Clean hands help prevent salt buildup or contamination that can cause dough to dry out or spoil more quickly.

Bonus Tip: Label the container with the date if it’s homemade—most recipes last 1–3 months with proper storage.
