Volunteering is a wonderful way for everyone to gain all kinds of skills, social included. If you don’t want your son to volunteer on his own, check into family volunteering opportunities. They’re readily available in almost every neighborhood.

Opt for a College That Offers Support

Almost every college has at least one college program designed for students with disabilities. Take the extra time necessary to look into this thoroughly. Obviously, the program probably won’t be autism-specific. However, these universities are the best place to start.

Begin Researching Early

Many counselors recommend beginning college research for an autistic boy when he is in eighth grade. This gives you more than ample time to research all aspects of college life and how it fits in with your family’s specific goals and situation.


Focus on Strengths

Even though it’s important for everyone to improve upon doing things they’re not the greatest at, focusing on strengths is a big step in getting your son ready for college. For example, if he excels in math, encourage a degree requiring advanced courses in the field.

 Be Honest with the School

It’s extremely important to be honest with the school your son is going to attend. There’s no point in failing to mention certain details. Chances are, teachers and school officials are more than willing to work with your child to make his educational journey successful. But, in order to do so, you need to convey the whole story.

Let’s be real, oftentimes our Autistic Sons are exactly like any other boy out there.  They don’t care about hygiene and they do care about their electronics.
