Is the Letter X a hard letter for kids to learn?

The letter X often poses unique challenges for children in the learning phase of reading and writing. Unlike more straightforward consonants, X is more complex; it can represent different sounds depending on context, and it rarely takes the leading role in words.

Its common “ks” sound as in “box” or “fox” can be perplexing when placed at the beginning of a word, where the letter is typically pronounced like a “z” as in “xylophone”.

This letter is sparingly used in the English language, which means children may have fewer opportunities to practice and encounter it during early literacy lessons. The unfamiliarity coupled with these inconsistencies makes X a candidate for one of the more challenging letters for kids to learn and master.
