Easter Egg Coloring for Toddlers and Preschoolers

Have you started coloring eggs yet? I love the egg decorating process! I even picked up a book at the library called Easter Eggs: 40 Fabulous Projects for the Whole Family for inspiration. I haven’t read it yet, but I’m looking forward to browsing the pages!

We decided to do a little egg coloring this week, but as you probably know, toddlers don’t find traditional egg dyeing all that egg-citing, so we decided to add a little extra fun to our egg decorating activity. Care to join us?

What You Need:

Hard boiled eggs
Crayons
Liquid Glue
Glitter
Traditional Egg Dye Kit
Newspaper for catching messes (optional)
Cups or glasses for holding dye
Paper plate for each kid’s station (optional)

What You Do:

To begin, distribute the eggs evenly among the kids. Have kids color on their eggs with crayons. I set up everything on a paper plate to keep things more corralled, but that is optional, of course.

While kids are coloring eggs, set up the egg dyes in cups according to the directions on the package.

Once the eggs are colored, invite kids to pick a color and dunk their egg. If you’re feeling really brave, have kids place the egg in the cup and retrieve it themselves. Most of the time, the crayon will resist the dye, leaving the design easy to spot once the egg is dyed.

If the eggs need even more sparkle once they are dyed (or if you want to jump straight to glitter), grab some liquid glue and water it down about 1/2 and 1/2. Have kids paint the glue onto the egg.

Once that is complete, sprinkle a little glitter directly on the egg and a little more glitter on the plate. Have the kids roll the egg around until it is a glitter perfection!
