A natural birth allows for proper release of oxytocin which is the key hormone for birth, breastfeeding, and bonding. It allows for the mother to be in control of her own body, not the doctor or midwife. It allows the baby and mother to be more alert after birth for the important bonding that happens for the first hour after birth. It allows the woman to experience the highest release of oxytocin she will ever have in her entire life, the “natural birth high”. She is far less likely to need a cesarean section, forcep/vaccume delivery, or episiotomy that can be caused by interventions such as epidurals and Pitocin. It also allows for a better chance for having a successful breastfeeding relationship. By the way, a midwife is trained the same as if not better than an obstetrician in relation to a normal birth. Natural birth isn’t just about being comfortable, it is about being healthy and in control, and not creating any unnecessary complications from routine interventions.
