When I first started cloth diapering, I was so confused about all the information about cloth diapering. And I made just about every mistake in the book. I’ve written this handbook to save others the same frustration–and time researching!
If I had known then what I know now, I would’ve used cloth diapers for all my children and saved hundreds, if not thousands of dollars! I started cloth diapering with my fourth (and hopefully last) child. I had started researching cloth diapers as an option when my third was still in diapers, but it was such a big investment I didn’t have the money to spend on building up my stash and also buying disposable diapers, so I never made the switch. I entered contest after contest though to try and at least win a few, but that never panned out either. When I got pregnant with my fourth I was determined to use cloth diapers and I was blessed with some amazing friends who bought me my first twelve cloth diapers to get me started, then through gifts and what not I was able to complete my stash and I have been cloth diapering ever since.
The first year went quite smoothly, but once we started solids and he weaned himself things started getting tricky. He got rashes and what looked like ammonia burns from his night time diapers. I searched the internet to find solutions and almost every website had a different solution or I couldn’t find my exact problem. I found myself clicking through website to website without a solid solution. It’s very frustrating to see my little guy have such a severe rash and not be able to do anything but put him in disposables until the rash clears up. And that’s just as frustrating! I decided to go with cloth because it’s better for him and it’s just plain cheaper but to have to put him in disposables to clear up a rash just doesn’t seem logical.
