Learn the Muscular System {Third Grade Unit Study}

Sharing is caring!

It’s fun to Learn the Muscular System! This is a great unity study for elementary-aged students and a simple way to learn about muscles.

Themed Unit Studies like this are great resources to help learn about particular lessons!

You can pair this with our skeletal system learning activity as well. While we don’t dive deep into the scientific names, we learn what they do for the body!

There are many fun ways to make learning about new subjects happen. While this might be about muscles, check out some of my other favorite resources you can pair with this activity or add to it just as easily.

Here are some other learning platforms to explore with the kids about learning the various parts of the muscular system.

I’ve also included some resources for more learning fun.

  • Miscellaneous Activities –  You can check out this video.  We will also do Isometrics work during the day as part of our physical education to “work our muscles.”
  • Art – Have the kids draw out and label the human body. You can also research online and use art resources appropriate for the kids.
  • Reading –  You can get a lot of good information from My First Encyclopedia.
  • Personal Care – Bathing, eating, and brushing teeth can be worked on easily at home.
  • Handwriting –  We have a lot of great handwriting resources on our site. When it comes to the human body, check these out: Human Tongue Activities, The Human Heart Worksheets for Kids, The Human Ear Worksheets for Kids
  • Spelling – Working on spelling words like muscle, relax, strength,  move, skeletal, smooth,  heart, breathe, biceps, and triceps – used the word search maker for one day to find new words.
  • Bible –  We are reading a couple pages at a time of Great Bible Stories For Children
  • History/Social Studies – Since athletes use muscles, talk about the greatest athletes throughout history.
  • Language Arts – Check out this Muscle-Themed worksheet from Scholastic printables.
  • Math – Using Math Aids is a great math resource. For other math resources for varying themes and topics, check out this Math Car Race Game or these Dragon Math Activities for Preschool.
  • Science –  Biology for Kids is a great learning option.

Brain Pop Jr, Easy Science for Kids, and my homeschooling freebies are great educational resources.

What are fun ways to teach kids about the muscular system?

The muscular system is an integral part of our body, and teaching children about it should be fun and informative.

The best way to teach kids about the muscles is to start with simple activities that help them identify different muscle groups. Puzzles, coloring sheets, and drawing exercises can all be used to help children understand and memorize muscles.

Another effective method is for the teacher or parent to playfully mimic motions like reaching up for something or flexing your arm, then ask the child to identify which muscles are used for each motion correctly.

Children can better understand the muscular system by involving hands-on activities in the learning process.

What movements for kids can also teach them about their muscular system?

Children of all ages can benefit from activities incorporating physical exercise and knowledge about the muscular system. These activities promote a healthy lifestyle for kids and help them build a foundation for future learning.

Examples include having children pair up and teach each other basic concepts about how muscles work and interact with other body parts, such as bones and tendons.

Additionally, by engaging in repetitive exercises with creative motions, kids can discover how certain muscle groups are utilized depending on the movement pattern.

For example, jumping jacks focus on larger muscle groups like the glutes, quads, and deltoids, while twisting movements target smaller areas like the obliques and intercostals. Incorporating a range of movements like this helps to provide an insightful overview of the functionality of each child’s muscular system.

At what age should children start learning about the muscular system?

It is recommended that children should begin to learn about the muscular system from the age of seven onwards.

At this age, they can appreciate learning about how their bodies work and adequately understand basic muscle structure and function concepts.

This can be achieved through theory-based explanations and practical activities like labeling diagrams or participating in physical activities that give them a sense of how different muscles interact.

Education about the muscular system should be age-appropriate and be supplemented with interactive, hands-on activities focusing on positive body image and well-being.

This will develop a secure knowledge base and positive attitude towards learning, sensing, moving, and interacting.

What is the muscular system in the body?

The human body has over 650 skeletal muscles, which comprise approximately 40 percent of its total mass.

Of these, the main muscular system which provides movement and stability is the musculoskeletal system.

This consists of various muscles connected to the bones, joints, ligaments, and other connective tissue, allowing for locomotion and lifting weights.

Keep in mind that websites and resources change all the time, so feel free to switch things out, and use these options as just a template or a guide.

The biggest thing to remember is that once you figure out how to play and study, it gets easier with each time that you start a new learning unit.

This is just a starting point, but it shows how to break things down into weekly learning fun.
