A year and a month ago, I was 40 pounds heavier. Forty! Sometimes that number is still so surreal. I’m not done losing weight quite yet, so I’m always looking for things to help me with my weight loss and healthy eating goals. One of my main problems is portion control. Restaurants have really warped my sense of how much food we should eat at a given meal. Some meals that I’ve ordered at restaurants (or even served myself at home) have huge plates filled to the rim with food.
Healthy Steps has developed what is probably the smartest thing in portion control that I’ve ever seen. So when you cook, you use utensils, right? So why not have utensils that show you how much food you should serve yourself? Genius! I received the serving set, cookie pro, and pasta basket to review. I can’t get over how smart these products are. It’s not just about portion control—it’s about the ease of preparing your food! The pasta basket is such a neat tool. It’s a portion control guide for both shaped and long pastas, and you can even cook and strain your pasta all in the same tool! Check it out:
See? You can measure long pastas in the handle, and shaped pastas in the built in strainer. You can actually hook the pasta basket on to your pot, so you can keep the portion accurate.
I told you this was a smart tool! Next up is the serving set. Included is a protein spatula, vegetable slatted spoon, and a starch solid spoon.
The protein spatula is about the size of a deck of cards, which is what the new MyPlate guidelines recommend. The veggie spoon is awesome, ’cause you get TWO spoonfuls of veggies! Mmm, broccoli. The starch spoon is a full serving. You have to be careful not to heap your food, or it will be more than one serving. I loved these tools! Whether using the protein spatula for chicken or eggs, I knew exactly how much I should be eating. The last tool I tested out is so, so cool. It’s a tool I would use even if it didn’t have portion control guidelines built in! The cookie pro is similar to an ice cream scoop, but for cookie dough. I know that if I totally swear off sweets, I’ll fail. So a cookie every now and then is okay, as long as it’s the proper serving size. Here is my lemon cookie dough in the cookie pro:
What’s super awesome, too, is that the back of the scoop is silicone, so all you have to do is press the dough out and pop! It lands on your cookie sheet. No messy hands rolling dough into balls! Sweet. It also has a handy spatula on the other end so you can remove the cookies from your baking sheet when you’re done.
Every little bit helps when it comes to weight loss and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. These tools are by far the neatest utensils I’ve ever used, and I’d definitely recommend them to anyone looking to maintain their portion control.
By the way, as wonderful as these tools are for at-home cooking, they aren’t going to help you out at a restaurant or on-the-go. However, there are great portion controlling tools for when you are out and about, such as the Sensa weight loss system!
