We try to be as “green” as possible; we’ve made many changes in our lifestyle that has helped us to reduce our waste significantly, considering we have a family of six. Shockingly we only produce one small bag of garbage a week, occasionally only one and a half. However, we still have a long way to go. Another change I’d like to make is reducing that amount of ziplock plastic bags we use. I don’t actually like using them but I haven’t found a suitable replacement yet, so in order to reduce the amount we use, I am stuck washing the plastic bags and reusing them. I don’t wash all of them, I have concerns reusing a bag that has had raw meat in it (but that’s another issue altogether ;)) but there are cases when I will wash and reuse them. The problem is washing them and where to put them while they dry. My husband and I both detest having them sit on the counter for days on end while they dry so a solution is definitely needed! A plastic bag washer would be extremely handy!
That’s where the Washy Wonder comes into play. The Washy Wonder is a one size fits all bag saver system, that allows you to easily wash your bags in the dishwasher. Simply install the paddles (I don’t know what else to call them) in your dishwasher place your bag over top and your ready to wash.
When I first went to use them I assumed that the paddles belonged on the top rack but they do not! They are too tall to go on the top rack so they need to be installed on the bottom. Because they just slip right over the prongs you can set them up to be used with any size bag. (They even work in dishwashers with bent prongs!) They are very easy to use and take up no more space then a plate.
I’ve been using the plastic bag washer for the last two weeks and I have to say I am impressed. I had concerns putting such flimsy plastic on the bottom shelf, because you always have those warnings like ’top rack safe’ because of the heat that is generated in the bottom compared to the top. I noticed a small amount of warping on the edge of the bags after washing, but other than that the bags were in perfect shape! I’m not sure I’m excited about the product, but it’s definitely a solution to the bag sitting on the counter issue I mentioned earlier and that makes it a winner in this house!
The Washy Wonder can be purchased direct from the site and Amazon at a cost of $6.95 plus shipping and handling.
