Specialty Ingredients:

The following ingredients for this Copycat Sonic Ocean Water float are affiliate links on Amazon because they may be a bit hard to find in your normal store.  I wanted you to be able to see exactly which things we are using.

The first step to making these delicious floats is to make your own ocean water. For that fizzy drink, you’ll need some lemon-lime soda, water, sugar, coconut extract, and blue food coloring.

Start by making a syrup with the water and sugar. Mixing equal parts water and sugar in a microwave-safe bowl, heat the ingredients for 30 seconds on high heat.

Allow the syrup to cool for a few minutes, then mix in your coconut extract. If coconut extract isn’t available, imitation coconut flavoring will also do the trick. Either way, you’ll add a yummy tropical flavor to your floats!

Must Have Resources:

When making this 4th of July Ocean Water drink at home, you really need to have the following Amazon affiliate tools on hand.

The next step will be fun for the kids – adding the food coloring. A little bit of food coloring goes a long way when using it in a liquid, so just a couple of drops will create a beautiful ocean blue color in your ocean water floats.

After all the ingredients are mixed well, pour the blue syrup into your lemon-lime soda and stir to mix everything together.

Now, you could stop here and have a simple, refreshing beverage for your ocean animals unit study. Simply pour the ocean water recipe over ice and take a sip!

But taking the drink up a notch will really get your kids into their homeschool lesson – and help them cool off on hot days. So, set the soda aside for a second and grab some ice cream.

Place two scoops of vanilla ice cream in a small cup for each of your students.

Then, slowly pour the soda over the top of the icing. Don’t pour too fast or the ice cream will cause the soda to fizz and overflow!

To really make this ocean animal drink even more fun, decorate it with some sprinkles. And don’t forget to place a cherry on top to complete the dessert!
