Have do you store leftovers of this hearty casserole recipe?

It couldn’t be more simple! Literally, just pop a lid on your casserole or baking dish and store it in the fridge. Then just cut out a piece and reheat and enjoy.

Make sure that when you reheat this sloppy joe recipe, that you heat it on medium heat or medium-high heat to warm it all the way through. The sloppy joe mixture needs to be heated properly due to the ground meat that is added. This will also help to make the crispy tater tots crispy again.

What I love about this great recipe is that it feeds the whole family!

What makes a casserole dish qualify as a casserole?

A casserole is a one-dish meal that typically contains meat, vegetables and a starch combined in a sauce or gravy and cooked in an oven.

True casseroles are not merely a combination of components simply layered into a dish; they must contain both appropriate proportions of ingredients and cooking techniques to qualify as casseroles.

To meet the standard definition, the dish also often requires additional seasonings, savory elements such as cheese or breadcrumbs, and other unique flavors for it to be classified as qualifying as such.

For example, layered tacos or nachos are generally not considered traditional casseroles although they can certainly have all the savory elements associated with them.

How do I store leftover casserole?

Storing leftover casserole can appear tricky if not done correctly. The main thing to remember is that food should never be left out of the refrigerator for more than two hours.

It is also important to ensure that any storage container is completely airtight, in order to avoid unnecessary spoilage or contamination.

When transferring the casserole from its original baking dish into the storage container, make sure you evenly spread the food across the entire surface.

This will prevent it from becoming too dry or sticking together when reheated later. The best containers for storing casseroles are made of materials such as glass or ceramic since they are safe for use in both the refrigerator and oven – perfect when reheating your leftover meal!

How do I reheat leftover casserole?

Reheating leftover casserole is a fairly straightforward approach, however there are certain guidelines to follow in order to make sure the dish is safely cooked without becoming dry.

The best idea is to allow the casserole to thaw overnight, either in the fridge or on your countertop.

If time constraints don’t allow for this, you may reheat the dish over low heat directly on the stovetop or by using a double-boiler.

When using an oven, be sure to wrap the casserole tightly with aluminum foil for insulation and keep an eye on it as smaller portions will cook faster than larger dishes.

Lastly, no matter which method is used, reheated casseroles should be heated until they reach an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C) before being served.

Can I add other ingredients to this delicious casserole?

Following the steps on the recipe card is what makes this family favorite, but if you want to change the taste of this classic casserole, you can add other simple ingredients. Putting extra cheeses on top of the casserole is a great way to add more flavor to this dish. You can also add chopped bell pepper, extra tomato sauce, diced red bell pepper, more chopped onions, and even some diced jalapenos to kick up the heat.

What is a great side dish to pair with this traditional recipe?

I’m all about pairing this dinner-worthly casserole with simple and easy recipes for side dishes. Easy dinners like this are already hearty and delicious, so keep the options to pair with it simply for an easy twist.

You can pair with a side salad, Caesar salad, or a little bit of steamed veggies. The meat mixture and tater tots are a great comfort food, so cooking light with the side dishes is a simple pro tip to keep balance.

I made this night before last and we really liked it. I had made another tater tot casserole with mushroom soup that I didn't like. But this one beat it by miles. We will be having this again. I'm going to try the taco casserole next!
