What are good dipping sauces for homemade hard pretzels?

Homemade hard pretzels can burst with flavor, especially when paired with a dipping sauce. An appealing way to boost the profile of these delicious snacks is to incorporate various dipping sauces.

Traditional options such as spicy brown mustard are always popular, while cream cheese-based dips provide a rich accompaniment filled with flavor.

For those looking for something more distinctive, yogurt-based or tahini-based sauces can offer an interesting twist when enjoyed alongside the pretzels.

Whichever dip is chosen, it can bring out the subtly sweet and savory elements of homemade hard pretzels for an enticing snack.

How do I store homemade hard pretzels?

Hard pretzels are a popular, crunchy snack. Making them from scratch provides a satisfying and flavorful experience.

For best results, homemade hard pretzels should be stored airtight to maintain freshness, crispiness, and taste for up to 2 weeks.

A resealable plastic bag or food storage container with an airtight lid can be utilized.

After filling them with the pretzels, squeeze out any excess air before sealing the bag or container to remove moisture and other contaminants.

Additionally, storing the container in a cool and dry place away from direct sunlight will maximize shelf-life and keep the pretzels at their best quality.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup milk
  • 4 Tablespoons butter, divided
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons yeast
  • 2 Tablespoons brown sugar
  • 3 cups flour
  • 8 cups plus 1 teaspoon water
  • 1/2 cup baking soda
  • 1 egg
  • Sea salt

Instructions

  1. Mix the milk and 2 tbsp of butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Heat to 125 degrees (hot, but make sure it doesn't boil), and then take off the heat.
  2. Stir the brown sugar and yeast into the mixture and let it proof for up to 5 minutes.
  3. Pour the mixture into a bowl and add the flour. Stir with a spoon or your hands.
  4. Knead the mixture for 5 minutes, and then cover with plastic wrap. Put the bowl in a warm spot in your kitchen.
  5. Give it 60 minutes to double in size, then punch the dough down. Divide the dough mixture into 8 even balls.
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
Grab a baking sheet and grease it.
  6. Put 8 cups of water and the baking soda in a saucepan and boil over high heat.
Shape the dough into pretzels by rolling each segment into 1-inch thick ropes. Then, form that rope into a U-shape, grab both ends and twist them twice at the top. Invert the twisted ends to the bottom of the U-shape and press the dough together, so it is secure.
  7. Using a slotted spoon, drop the pretzels into the boiling water and boil for 2 minutes.
  8. Place the boiled pretzels onto the greased baking sheet.
  9. Mix the egg and 1 teaspoon of water. Brush the mixture over the top of the rolls and add salt.
  10. Place the baking sheet in the oven and bake for 15 minutes, then reduce the heat to 350 degrees and bake for another 10-12 minutes.
