This Chinese Five Spice Blend Recipe is one of my favorite Chinese recipes. You’ll find this is most traditional Chinese dishes because it’s simple and just adds so much flavor.

Since there isn’t any baking required, you don’t have to worry about this taking a long time. All you have to do is mix the ingredients in a bowl and store until you’re ready to use. It’s literally as simple as that.

In fact, when I’m creating my spice blends in the kitchen, the boys love to jump in and help! This is such a fun way for them to learn how to properly measure and read directions and be a part of the planning process.

What is the best way to store this seasoning blend?

Once you get all the ingredients mixed, you just need to store the blend in a jar and keep it in a cool dry place. This should be self-stable without issues and not have to be kept in the fridge.

Ingredients

  • 2 T fennel seeds
  • 6 Star Anise
  • 1 1/2 tsp cloves
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 2 tsp Szechuan peppercorns

Instructions

  1. Place all ingredients in a smoother blender with a fine-grain blade or a coffee bean grinder.
  2. Puree until smooth.
  3. Store in an airtight mason jar for up to one year.
