When I first launched the program I was please that it ran in full screen mode as many other children’s application don’t consider the fact that little hands and little eyes need a bigger screen. With a large paint brush as a mouse cursor and a lot of bright and beautiful colours it’s a comfortable but not over stimulating environment for kids to learn in.
I liked that it helps kids to learn their colors and numbers, even at a young age. I have two kids in the age range of the software both of whom can really benefit from using something like this. My six year old in particular liked the option to color in your favorite colors. It seemed that the color by numbers option was a bit restricting for her. However it was a great opportunity for her to continue to develop her computer and mouse skills, so even the parts she liked less were a good learning experience for her. I can’t imagine however that she would continue to be interested up to age 13 as the company recommends.
In fact I think both of my kids could have begun using this earlier then the company recommends beginning at age three with some parental guidance. For the younger audience I liked the fact that the color by number did allow them to use the wrong color which helps to teach them to match colors and numbers, although as they get older the matching becomes more obvious so that feature can be a little restricting as well.
Aside from the color by number option and color in your favorite color there is also the option to color to make it visible. This is basically a more advanced version of the color by number by simply cutting up the picture into smaller elements, this makes the overall picture less evident until it is completely colored in.
At $9.99, it’s not an unreasonable price but that purchase only gets you a single theme, so if I want something that both my boys and girl can use, it seems a bit pricey to me that have to purchase separate versions at $9.99 a piece. Although the fact that it is available for Mac, Windows and Linux does make it a bit more flexible for all users.
