Hey KraftFoods, Chicago is My Kind of Town

*Frank Sinatra recorded several versions which have appeared on many of his albums. Also, many artists have performed the song as a tribute to Sinatra in posthumous tribute albums. In addition, the song had been recorded by many other artists prior to Sinatra’s death. The lyrics, which praise the city of Chicago for its people and institutions, repeat the phrase My Kind of Town several times, usually in a line that says “My kind of town, Chicago is”

That’s right, I am headed back to the The Windy City and I am badgev2 Hey KraftFoods, Chicago is My Kind of Townsuper excited!  The last time I went to Chicago was for the International Home and Housewares Show, this time I am going to Kraft Kitchens!  Not only will I get to meet some of the other Delicious Byte Bloggers, but they have some pretty interesting things planned during our 24-hour stay in Chicago:

  • Hot Topic Informational Sessions (hmm, sounds important)
  • Hands-on Cooking Demonstrations (OMG, I am a bit nervous about cooking in front of other people! Besides, can I do it without kids and a dog underfoot? Guess we will find out very soon.)
  • Sneak Peek at New Products (whoo hoo!)
  • Roundtable Discussion (they want to hear from me and my readers!)
  • and Lunch at Kraft Kitchens! (How cool is this?)

Are you excited, yet?  Think of the things I am going to be able to tell you upon my return.  Plus, think of the pictures I am hoping to be able to share. icon smile Hey KraftFoods, Chicago is My Kind of Town

Do you have anything you would like for me to discuss with KraftFoods?  Ideas? Opinions?  Things you would like to see on my blog?  Clue me in and I will add them to my notebook of questions and thoughts.  They are putting a lot of time and money into this event and I would love to make it worth it.  Plus, I want to write about things that ACTUALLY interest my readers so they (YOU!) read and respond. icon smile Hey KraftFoods, Chicago is My Kind of Town

So, don’t be surprised to not hear a peep out of me through Monday and Tuesday as I will be slightly busy. I will have my gift guides scheduled as well as a few tweets during my time.  I spent some time today figuring out how to Tweet, update FaceBook, and check in with FourSquare through my boring, non-smart phone.  I learned that all of it can be done via text message, so you might be seeing some on location stuff from me during that time, but don’t expect responses until I return home or during air travel. icon smile Hey KraftFoods, Chicago is My Kind of Town

For fun, here is a list of the bloggers that will be in attendance:

  2. Barb of Blogfully
  3. Brandy of Not So Average Mama
  4. Danielle of Home Ever After

Important Information: Lots of tid-bits!

Did you notice all the posts this morning?  I had problems, lost a TON of information, and am just getting it back… thank goodness for a WONDERFUL ISP! icon smile Important Information: Lots of tid bits!   Anyway, consequently, I have several things to address.

#1 – Happy Halloween! Are you ready for Halloween?  Unfortunately, I am not!  My Spooktacular Soiree went really well, but due to unforeseen circumstances, I was unable to get two of the posts written nor all winners drawn. icon sad Important Information: Lots of tid bits!   I hate that because it means you girls are not going to have your wins in time for Halloween.  On the bright side, you will have them for next year. LOL!

#2 – Holiday Gift Guides – Due to the loss of information, my gift guide may not be written exactly as I had planned. icon sad Important Information: Lots of tid bits!   I was unable to contact everyone that contacted me about being in my guides.  I am trying now to work through the millions of recovered emails (trying to figure out which ones are simply duplicates and which ones need responding to), but I might be working gift guides into December, also.  This means my November gift guides are going to be smaller than I planned… but still good! icon smile Important Information: Lots of tid bits!

#3 – 100 Days to Christmas – I have no idea how many days we have left.  Again, loss of info and now reconstructing, etc… I am not going to be able to catch up on this, so be sure to go to the 100 Days to Christmas site to catch up.  Hopefully, I will be able to pick up where I left off a bit later.

#4 – Emails - If you have sent an email to my momof3boys3702@mchsi.com address and have not heard from me, please drop me another email!

#5 – Comments – If you had a pending comment, it has now been approved (as of last night).

I think that is it, thanks again to my wonderful readers (and companies!) for being patient while I get this all back under control. icon smile Important Information: Lots of tid bits!

A Teachable Moment ™ Moment October 2009

A Teachable Moment:  Dr. Susan S. Bartell

Can we get a dog…please??

October is Adopt-A-Dog month. Shelters everywhere are encouraging potential owners to adopt dogs into loving homes—which is wonderful because there are many dogs in need of adoption!

Indeed, one of the questions parents ask me most frequently—at least several times a month–is the following:

“Dr. Susan, we’re thinking of getting a dog—would it be good for our kids?”

And from kids I hear:

“Mom, please can we get a dog? I PROMISE I’ll do everything…you won’t have to do anything! I PROMISE…Pleeeeze!!!

Adopt-a-Dog Month really gets me thinking about these two questions because I find that often parents believe bringing a pet into their home will miraculously make their child more responsible…especially if said child begs very persuasively!

This simply isn’t the case! It is a big decision, to be made carefully with forethought—you have a responsibility to your family and to the pet you might adopt.

To make sure you make the right decision, follow these SEVEN tips. Doing so will ensure that you are adopting a pet for the right reasons. If, by the end of this article, you’re not quite sure your family is ready, simply wait another year or so, then re-read the article and try again (that means you should hold onto the article!):

1. A child’s promise to do ‘everything’, should not be taken as gospel. Most kids—even teens—don’t understand the responsibility (remember when you ‘thought’ you knew what parenting would be like…). Many don’t even have the time to do it all. You MUST expect that you—the adult—will need to do most of the work. If you are not prepared for this, don’t get a pet!

2. It’s okay to get a dog, in part, to ‘teach your child responsibility’, but it’s not okay to give all the responsibility to your child. Your child should start out with a small job (feeding or walking the dog once a day) and go from there.

3. The rules for teens are different. If yours doesn’t want a pet, but you get one anyway, you can’t force pet responsibilities on him. With luck, your teen will grow to feel affection for the dog and want to take care of it. However, don’t count on this or become upset if it doesn’t happen–teens are sometimes self-centered. Besides, this is not a fair fight since you wanted the pet, not him.

4. Test out owning a dog, by dog-sitting for a week. This will help your family see whether they are ready for the commitment.

5. Consider your other responsibilities right now. If you’re getting divorced, moving, looking for a new job, or dealing with any other major issue, this may not be the right time for another big responsibility.

6. If your child is terrified of dogs, don’t get one expecting the fear to vanish. If she’s not afraid of puppies, start there–her fear of big dogs may dissipate as her puppy grows up.

7. Consider the financial responsibility of owning a dog—food, shots, grooming, possible vet bills for illness.

You may have noticed…

That my blog posts are diminishing.  Do not worry, all the older posts can be found at my new site www.3boysandadog.com  I wanted to delete posts from this site that are already on that site as I do not want to get punished by Google for duplicate content.

Starting tomorrow, I will be posting on the new site.  So, now is the time to get over there and sign up for the RSS or email feed.  You don’t want to miss anything, trust me!
