My Cabinet Clean Out Bottoms

I am home from Orlando and totally exhausted. I am behind on everything! Yuck! While I was taking a quick break from “school” I thought I would jump on and see what is happening with my blog. As usual, NOTHING. :-( I haven’t figured out how to get regulars without dumping a ton of money into advertising.

I also figured it would be a good time to get my pictures taken of my lower cabinets so I could get this post made. My goal is to have them all cleaned out before Monday morning. :-)

This is to the right of my stove and is my tupperware cabinet. My middle boy is supposed to stay on top of this one, but it doesn’t look like he has been doing his job. :-) I will get it back the way it should be and then be sure he keeps it that way. :-) Since I have been homeschooling, we have really let a bunch of our chores slide and need to get back into the habit of them.
This is at the farthest end of my cubboards. It is supposed to house most of my small appliances: dehydrator, crock pots, sandwich maker, quesadillo maker, and food processor.

This is under the sink… goodness at the junk in there!! All those cleaners are supposed to fit into that milk crate, doesn’t look like they do, does it?

to the right of the sink: this is the bulk of my pots and pans. Another mess! How did my typically neat cabinets turn into this disaster!?

To the left of my sink: should hold baking pans, large serving dishes, and my tea maker.

Now that my pictures are all listed, I guess I need to get busy getting things cleaned out. :-) I hope some join me this time! :-)

My Cabinet Clean Out Update 3

Well, all of my upper kitchen cabinets are now totally clean! Unfortunately, now I have another project to work through and need to get going on it. Let me show my pictures and then I will explain.

<--- This is the cabinet to the left of my sink before I cleaned it out. My final cabinet! I haven't changed much, but I did clean out the junk and throw stuff away.

You know, when I do a project like this, it really gets me motivated to do more projects. As I said in an earlier post, when I return from my semi-vacation, I want to tackle my lower cabinets.

AFTER:
This is my newly organized cabinet. I said I have a new project to work on, so let me explain now.

On the left-middle shelf, you see a stack of cookbook magazines. My new project is to begin working through these, pulling out recipes that I am wanting to try, and to begin working those recipes into our weekly meal plans. This way, I will actually try them. Once we make and try them, the family will vote on whether we want to have that again one night. If majority says, “yes” then it will be added to my recipe box. If majority say, “no” then in the trash it will go!

Hopefully, if we choose to keep something, I will have to time to sit down and add the recipe to my blog

My Cabinet Clean Out Update 2

Today has been one of those days… we didn’t get much school work done as I had an eye appointment this morning. After the eye appointment, I went to my Creative Memories lady’s house to pick up a few things (to the tune of 200+ dollars, YIKES). Then, we went to eat and picked up my middle one from his school early after getting a call from the nurse. Ick!

Anyway, I was sewing during the baby’s nap and decided I needed to get up and be a bit productive so I got busy on a couple more cabinets.
BEFORE:
Remember this one? I wasn’t even sure of what was in this cabinet. I found some after sun lotion that I put in the fridge, some tanning lotion that I took to my bathroom, a globe that goes over and old light (TRASH), and some Bingo dobbers (also trash as I haven’t been to Bingo in YEARS).

After cleaning it all out I found that I was able to put something in here that has been sitting on top of my fridge… driving me insane! :-)

AFTER:

That is so much better! Now, I can actually get to my appetizer plates without moving anything, the gumball machine is off my fridge, and the money miser that we only use occasionally is in the back.

Can you tell a difference? I did put things away out of here and threw away a bit, also. I wish I had more cabinets to keep things in, but they seem to do what I want as long as I don’t stash trash and junk in them.
BEFORE:
On this one, it is hard to see a difference, but I can feel it. My middle shelf is now basically snacks (which means I was able to get a couple bags of chips off my pantry floor. That is another project for another day!)

I found tons of napkins in this drawer that I threw away. I also found 2 Pyrex dishes I didn’t even know I had . I have moved them to my laundry room with my other glass bake ware, so maybe I will use them now. If I don’t, I know someone who is moving into their own home soon and I will pass these right along.

AFTER:
Can you tell? #1, I pulled the Pyrex dishes out of the right corner where they were hidden and was able to put my poinsettia plates in that space. Now, I don’t have to move the Christmas plates to get to the solid white plates. I was also able to stack my Christmas serving bowls with those plates, so that made more room.
Consequently, I was able to free basically that whole top, right, shelf for my serving dishes, clearing out the entire middle shelf for our snacks! That cleared out my bottom shelf, so I don’t have to move chips to get to my bread basket and my cutting boards! YAY! Much easier to handle.
Oh, I also corralled all those packs of cookies into some Tupperware. It is amazing how much less room they take up this way.
I can’t wait to hear about others’ Kitchen Cabinet Clean Outs!!

My Cabinet Clean Out Update 1

Earlier today I wrote about my horrible kitchen cabinets. During supper prep tonight, I tackled a couple of them.

Do you remember the before pictures? Here they are again, just much smaller.
<------------------------>
These are the two cabinets flanking my stove.

Now my TA-DAs on these two. The best part is, they did not take long. I reorganized, de-cluttered, and wiped out both cabinets while prepping supper!

Cabinet #1 – to the right of my stove:

I threw out 14 prescription bottles dating all the way back to 2002!! OK, that is just plain crazy, isn’t it? I have reorganized my meds several times in the past 7 years, but could not part with my them. LOL! Who knows why? I told you I am frugal, but that is just plain ridiculous! It isn’t as if I (or anyone else in my house) has been taking them.

Now, the medicines are in their correct spots and I even put all my glasses away. After looking back at the first picture, I am surprised anyone believed me when I said I had mugs on the middle shelf .

Cabinet Number Two, to the left of my stove:
The spice cabinet doesn’t really look much different, but I did throw several empty bottles away. I was also able to combine to black pepper containers into one.

The main thing is… look my toaster is put away and so are my dish rags .

For those that want to know: I have zero counter space in my kitchen, so I had to be able to put most things away. This is why my toaster and can opener belong in my cabinet.

I can’t wait to see other people’s before and after pictures! Check in tomorrow as I clean out some more of those horrible cabinets :) Maybe, just maybe, when I get back from my semi-vacation, I will see about tackling the lower cabinets. They are really bad because my children can easily reach them. Anyone with small children know what that means.

Join me in cleaning my cabinets?

Laura, “An Organized Junkie,” inspired me to take a look around my kitchen. How in the world did my cabinets get this bad?? My mother always jokes that my floor might not be clean but everything is meticulously clean inside the closed doors . Typically, she would be right, but I have been so absorbed in homeschooling that my house has gotten awful.

So, today I took before pictures of my upper cabinets and I am challenging myself to get each cabinet cleaned out and reorganized before I leave my boys to fend for themselves. :-) I am going on a week long semi-vacation before the sun rises Friday morning.

Here we go… pictures of my shame :-) You know, they put doors on these things for a reason. So that people can make them as messy as they want without anyone ever knowing . Unfortunately, I am having a hard time functioning with my cabinets like this.

Picture #1
This shelf is beside my fridge, on the right hand side of my stove. It is supposed to be glasses on the bottom shelf. Mugs and daily medicines (like my son’s adderol, my vitamins, even Tylenol and benadryl as those are used regularly) on the middle shelf. Other medications, band aids, alcohol, etc should be on the top shelf… not on EVERY Shelf. :-) I am sure we have several prescription meds that are past their “good by date.” Shelf life on these are typically one year. I am pretty sure I have several up there way past that. I know, it isn’t a good idea to have all these meds in my house when I have 3 kids. I am frugal! I hate to throw away something when I could be using it the next time I am sick .

Am I the only one that does this? I am sure I can not be the only one who keeps meds past their prime Not to fret, mine are going to be cleaned out before I leave on Friday!
Picture #2
Cabinet #2 – this is on the left-side of my stove. See the nice empty spots? All those spots mean is that I need to put stuff away .

Top left: my dish rags belong here instead of in a stack in the laundry room.

Top Right: the spices that I buy from Sam’s (they are too tall for the other shelves).

Middle left: this is where my toaster belongs, but I was using it while taking the pictures so it didn’t get in the picture.

Middle Right: Hot pads/trivets and my husband’s hot sauces.

Bottom left and right: these are the bulk of my spices… I hate it! I have moved them from cabinet to cabinet and still have not found the way that works for me. I have tried baskets, etc. I am thinking maybe I need a lazy Susan. I hate having to dig each time I need something, but I can’t find a better way for me. :-( Maybe someone can offer up some advice on it. :-) Until then, I will just reorganize them again.

Picture #3
This cabinet is actually a long way from the others. I am not sure how my order got all messed up but, I am too lazy to go in and organize my pictures before writing. LOL! SO, this is on the left side of my sink.

Top right & left: my cookbooks.

Middle left: more cookbooks.

Middle Right: supposed to be phone books but seems to have a bunch of junk piled up there.

Bottom Left: My trusty recipe box and behind it are my Season’s Best cookbooks.

Bottom Right: I have taken to keeping some office supplies here since homeschooling. I am not crazy about them being here, but until I figure a better location I have my hole puncher, pencil sharpener, stapler, and flash cards stashed here. We do our homeschooling mostly at the kitchen table so this works for now, but I really want “office” out of my kitchen. Eventually, I will get it GONE, but for now here it is. :-)

Picture #4

This is on the right side of my sink and is in the corner with my spice cabinet. I do not like this cabinet because of the hidden space on the right side, but I have gotten a bit better with it. I basically have those “once in a while” things tucked into that hard to reach space.
Top left: saucers and special plates (my solid white ones and poinsettia ones)
Top right: uuhhh, who knows? Guess we will find out when I get it cleaned :-)
Middle left: the baby’s cookies and fruits. It was the place where baby food jars were kept and some how it has remained his shelf.
Middle Right: Serving dishes ,mostly, as well as my cup measure.
Bottom Left: Daily use plates and bowls.
Bottom Right: Snacks and my bread basket.
Picture #5
This is the little cabinet space above my stove. I don’t reach it very well… but I can reach it . On the left I have Pam and Olive Oil (I have no idea what all the other bottles amount to )
On the right is my money miser and my appetizer plates. Again, unsure of all the other junk. Stuff gets stashed in this cabinet for no apparent reason.
I am sure there is a better way to handle all my cabinet junk and really just need to get busy cleaning out instead of blogging about the mess . Maybe someone will join me in cleaning out their kitchens. Please feel free to put a link to your “kitchen cabinet clean out” in my comments section. My request is that your link goes dir3ectly to the article on your cabinet clean out, not to your blog homepage.
Also, please be sure to check back to see my cabinet progress!! I only have Tues, Wed, and Thurs left to get this done!!
